I must have stopped in off an off night. I called in a to go order for Red Beans and Rice. It was only 5:30pm so I was surprised to hear they were out of it for the day since it’s a creole staple. My second choice was ratatouille. When I got it home it was so bland. I had to add a ton of hot sauce to try to perk it up. the place is adorable and the people so friendly. Prices are right. It has a clam shack feel to it with the informal picnic tables, etc. This place should be a clam shack! It’s cute. I will give it another chance on another occasion. I really want to love it. :)

J Gumbo’s was the highlight of my afternoon at some unmemorable brewery opening near Enfield. They rolled up in their food truck and dished out a small but fabulous selection of drunken chicken, bourbon chicken and gumbo. We ordered the drunken & bourbon chicken over rice and were unexpectedly, yet pleasantly surprised at how flavor packed both dishes were. I’ll definitely stop by their restaurant and check out the full menu soon!

Just stopped in because we seen the cajun restaurant. The portions were huge, but the flavor left me feeling disappointed. The staff was nice but the food sets in a steam table, not freash made. Was looking for true New Orleans flavor. I am sorry I didn’t find it. I will tell you in Springfield there is a place called Big Mamous which has down home New Orleans flavor. Is J Gumbos a chain? Oh well.

My boyfriend and I ate here tonight and it was amazing. We had the NOLA nachos to split and I had the Jean Lafitte. Both amazing. My bf had the Bourbon chicken he said it was delicious. Portions are huge and prices are low. Staff was super friendly! It’s one of those hidden gem type of places. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities and it’s hard to find good creole around here. Hope they do well, definitely will be back!

Glad we stopped! Heading home from the mall the word«Gumbo» caught our eye. We have been to NOLA many times and I can’t pass up good Cajun food. This little place is great. Everyone here was very friendly, felt like its family owned and run(not sure if that’s the case). We got take out and it was ready fast. We started with voodoo nachos which could have been a mean a meal in itself. Delicious with a good mount of spice. I got the gumbo which I thought was great. Gumbo can be made both with okra or without, I prefer without which is the way they make it. The rue was dark and flavorful. My wife got the crawfish étouffée which was also very tasty. All of this great food and to top it off it’s reasonably priced. I was shocked when I signed the bill. A nice surprise! Overall, I’ll be back. Next time we will byob and stay a while. Can’t wait to try other menu options. Give it a try!

I was looking to warm up with a bowl of Gumbo so I thought I would give J. Gumbo’s a try. I ordered my bowl to go and it was still hot when I got home. The serving size was a little less than I expected for $ 7.50. It was served with buttered toast. Corn bread would have been a better choice. The broth was on the thin side. I am used to a thicker gumbo. It was spicy and flavorful with ample amounts of anduoille sausage. What was barely discernible was chicken. There were a few stray pieces less than a half inch in size. At least I think it was chicken Also completely missing was okra. Gumbo without okra? Unheard of. It’s probably unfair to judge an entire menu by a bowl of gumbo, but when your name is J. Gumbo, the gumbo should be great. For now my go to place for Cajun food is the Big Mamou in Springfield, Ma. In the meantime I will be generous with 3 stars since this is the only entrée I tried.

Food is: hot, flavorful, quick, and affordable. One order of voodoo chicken serves as lunch and dinner for me. Service is outta this world. Only Cajun place around so– enjoy Enfield!

Heard a lot of great things about J. Gumbos and decided to give it a try. I ordered the Jean Lafitte(a mixture Bumblebee Stew and Voodoo Chicken topped with cheddar cheese & sour cream). It was TODIEFOR! This is the most flavorful dish I have had out a restaurant in a very long time. The flavor combo was sweet and spicy and just plain delicious. The portion was huge and the buttered french bread was the perfect accompaniment. I also ordered mini cornbread and those were great as well. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for amazing and flavorful food!

If this is your first time having real gumbo and Cajun food, I am sorry to say that you may be let down. The food here is generally missing that special pizazz or kick that is so unique to Cajun and Creole cuisine. There are hundreds(or thousands) of variations of gumbos and etoufee recipes out there, but it just seems that J Gumbo’s is playing it a little too safe when it comes to flavor experimentation and boldness. Anyone who’s had the fortune to try authentic Louisiana food knows what I mean when I say that seasoning, spice, and aroma must be well-balanced. It’s what makes southern food so unique. But sadly, I feel that this is not the case with J. Gumbo’s.

I was excited to see this open up and finally had a chance to stop in today for carry out. I ordered the jambalaya and voodoo chicken. One for lunch and one for dinner. The inside of the place was clean and I was greeted by a worker who was attentive, it was a couple minute wait to complete my order which I had phoned in earlier. I got home and started at the chicken dish. It was white rice topped with chicken in a tomato sauce, it had nice seasoning, but had a lot of grease in it. The jambalaya was opened a few hours later after being in the fridge, it was disappointing. It had disproportionately large pieces of sausage and very tiny amount of chicken, also served over white rice. Jambalaya should be served with either shrimp or crawfish, and there was some flavoring opportunity in this dish. The prices were fine, I hoped to see some more authentic creole dishes, but based off of my experience, I’ll pass on exploring the rest of the menu…

First time here but I think this place has promise. I ordered Crawfish Étouffée, it had a modest amount of Crawfish and the accompanying Étouffée, while a little thicker than I am use to, was flavorful with just enough spice to let you know it’s Cajun pedigree. It was serve over an enormous portion of white rice with a slice of buttered toast. All I can say is «I’ll be back» to try other Cajun favorites.

Jessica and I saw this place on our way to Collin’s Creamery(love that place), and decided to check it out on our way back. Much like you would expect a wing place to have good wings, I expect a cajun/creole place to have good gumbo. We ordered it to go and I thought the price was a little high considering the size of the to go container… oh well if it tastes good no biggie. We mix the rice and gumbo together when we get home and see what its all about. This is the worst gumbo I’ve ever had from a place that aligns itself as cajun food. The roux was burnt, the onions weren’t rendered enough and sliced way too big(should have been chopped and not so pungent). It was also lacking bell peppers which is part of the holy trinity of cajun cuisine(cmon guys). It said it was a chicken and sausage gumbo. Neither I or Jessica got any chicken. The andouille sausage was good but sliced way to big, they could have halved or maybe even quartered the pieces, kind of annoying when I have to bite a portion of the meat off to ensure I have meat in more than just 3 or 4 bites. Needless to say when the sausage was eaten, we stopped eating the gumbo, it wasn’t worth finishing. I’m also used to seeing cornbread served on the side with gumbo, which I don’t remember even seeing cornbread on the menu. Bottom Line: A good cornbread could have made this a solid 3. They have some interesting sounding nachos on the menu, but I’m not sure if I can bring myself to waste another meal on this place when Big Mamou’s is just as close and always spot on.

I was looking forward to their opening for some time now. Stopped in tonight to check it out. It’s a small place with a huge menu outside on the wall. You walk in an order up front and they bring food to your table. I tried to order the jambalaya but they were out. I ordered the crawfish cheese dip and the crawfish étouffée. Service was decent and prompt. Now the food. The crawfish cheese dip was mediocre, having about 5 crawfish in a half full bowl. It had a weird texture that was like half brown roux and half cheese. Wasn’t really a big fan. The étouffée had a similar overly thick gelatinous brown roux over a big bowl of white rice with about four or five crawfish tails. Complete rip off for the price. It was basically Cajun fast food. I don’t like knocking new businesses, but the food wasn’t that good. It was bland and lacked any«love» you’d find in any good food. I’d maybe go back to try the jambalaya if they have any. My only comparison would be Big Mamou’s, and J Gumbo’s could not compete with that.
