I had the red snapper with garlic sauce: A+! But they wouldn’t give me the recipe :(. Hubby had the al pastor tacos and he loved them. Very nice people running the place

El Portal is close to my work and many of us visit regularly. We have used them for catering a handful of times and have been pleased with the pricing and quality of the food. We can also call in our regular lunch orders for pickup and it will be ready quickly and correctly. Their carne asada is awesome any way you order it. Burritos are huge and well worth the money. We often suggest this place to friends looking for inexpensive good Mexican food.

I was guided by Unilocal here and for that I am grateful. I originally wanted tacos but then we decided on burritos. Carne asada and California burrito. As soon as we got our non greasy fries, we knew the food is great. They have a toppings and sauces bar and they have a good selection. The meat was warm, tasteful, rich and purely delicious. My new favorite Mexican food place! I don’t have pictures because I was very hungry.

Never again! Decided to try this place since I haven’t been here since I was little. Made an order by phone, and we said no cheese and tomato on a certain order. I always check orders before I go because places seem to mess up sometimes. Now we saw that this whole order had cheese and tomato on it. Told the two women behind the counter nicely that they made a mistake. And all they did was talk smack when we walked away while they fixed it. Big no no. The food was okay, but customer service is what will not bring me back to this place.

I got the fish rolled tacos — I do feel like the fish could have had a little more texture(it kind of cooked into a mush), but the flavors were delicious and the taco perfectly fried with LOTS of toppings. Very affordable price and a great salsa bar(including spicy carrots, my fav!).

This as our first time here. I had the bacon, egg, cheese, frijoles, hash brown breakfast burrito which was excellent. The cheese was the real deal and not that packaged plastic crap that doesn’t melt. My wife wasn’t sure what to order so I asked the nice lady if they served chiliquiles(a favorite of my wife) and it turns out they do. The chiliquiles was excellent but be very careful as the cooked in some jalapeños which is great but be prepared to pick them out if you don’t appreciate picante comeres. Overall good experience with a nice staff and good food. The prices can’t be beat, this may be the last $ 5 burrito in town.

I am glad that they don’t use lard in their beans, I asked. They said they use vegetable oil. The prices here are great and portions are big. I got a bean and cheese burrito and it was okay, I would probably try something else next time but It seems like they don’t have a lot of vegetarian options.

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this spot! BESTBREAKFASTBURRÓTE in town. They’ve done it again another excellent bkfast burrito. I’ve been a loyal patron since 2005 and for the past 11 years I get 2 things here that I can vouch for, the bacon breakfast burrito and the Carne asada fries. I’ve tried other dishes, like the birria, but I’m picky and prefer a more authentic jalisco flavor. Those are the 2 best items at this spot, my beau is more adventurous here and switches it up everytime. HE Has tried the cárnitas plate, tacos, machaca plate and he loved them all, I tend to find my favorite item on the menu and stick with it for 10+ years lol. Hands down I don’t waste my time or money on any other bacon breakfast burritos in the area, other places just leave me disappointed, not el portal. They got a really good salsa too that taste like Chile relleno salsa, I love breakfast here!

Got an order of lengua and adobada tacos. Bland and flavorless. Salsa at the salsa bar is sad and adds nothing to the food. I won’t be coming back.

This place is honestly really good! Me and my boyfriend always tend to go here when we are looking for a reasonable price and when we went something to really fill us up! At first it was all about the their roll tacos, but recently we’ve been switching it up and today we got carne asada nachos and let me tell you they were really good. Also free refills! It deserves 5 stars because for the amount of times we’ve been there we haven’t been disappointed once. Highly recommend it!

This is my go to mexican food place in escondido. The people are nice, they have a little salsa bar with free hot carrots, radishes, and cucumbers. The cali burrito is made with hash browns instead of fries and is the size of a human baby and is delicious!

Family ran restaurant that serves great food with generous portions. The people there are very friendly, the price of their entrees are reasonable and the store is very clean. I would highly recommend this place to any one looking for good authentic Mexican food.

Best carne asada tacos in Escondido. Tj style mini tacos are delicious. We got 15 tacos for only 22 $ and they load them with meat one taco is literally 2.

Visited this taco on a late night dinner run and I was pleased to see that they still had fresh veggies for customers. Food was reasonably priced and staff was friendly. Nice place to grab some Street tacos.

They have good tacos, price is fair. I tried the carne asada fries and they are not that bad, didn’t know they put beans on them, never try them like that before. Good costumer service, place is not that big but they try to keep it clean. Overall the service was good, they were kind enough to change the channel to a soccer game, so that’s always a plus.

DAMN. A hole in the wall with fantastic Mexican food. Ignore the negative reviews. We tried this place one night when we were on vacation and we kept coming back as much as we could. Delicious with friendly service and phenomenal prices. Yum!

Horrible! It’s been a few hours since my family ate here and 3 out of the 4 of us have horrible stomach ‘issues’ and must remain close a bathroom. I’m a pretty adventurous eater but this one has me down for the count

HA! This was probably the worst cheese enchilada that I’ve ever had(including the duds I used to make 10 yrs ago!) . Why Adam? It was a to go order and when i got home I couldn’t find the enchilada! It was actually cooked into the styrofoam flat that it is served on! I had to peel it off and even then it wasn’t rolled up. Moreover, why places insist on flooding them with tasteless red sauce and then adding copious amounts of lettuce dumbfounds me. But maybe that is the intent with this slop food that i encountered this morning. The breakfast burrito i had was ok, nothing special and not a lot of egg. One can find the same thing in a hundred different places. The hot sauce selection faired much better. They was a variety and they all tasted fresh. Finally, the lady working the counter(mid 40s) was a little aloof. No smiles, no thank you etc etc… How can someone not smile at 8:30am? Anyway, i won’t be back to this place.

Long time Escondido resident here and I must say — this is the best Mexican food in town!!! The carne asada is cooked Perfectly and you can taste the quality in the meat. You can tell that Albertos down the street uses MUCH cheaper meat than this place. Also, they offer like 6 different salsas and carrots, fresh green onion, and radish in their salsa bar… I ordered their half order of carne asada fries which literally was the best ive ever had Anywhere… using skinny fries was a plus!

I was about to try the Greek place next door but they were closed so I went here. As I walked in: it was hot(no air-condition), tables are semi-cleanish, and a wide wall for a menu selection to choose from. I said to myself: «just the way I like it!!!» So I ordered the asada supreme.(Pretty much a carne asada burrito w/sour cream) it was delicious. The asada had a nice saltiness and taste to it and the cheese was melted which most other taco shops have it cold inside. I also ordered a fountain drink where they have horchata, jamaica, etc that’s offered so… Free refills!!! For me what makes or breaks a taco shop is the salsa bar. I like to have a variety of salsa when eating at a taco shop. They have the spicy carrots and lime wedges but the«salsa verde»(which is my favorite) tasted like it was watered down… Overall I had to give this place a 3 star because of the«salsa verde». Would I come back here??? Sure, but I’m not much of a hurry to do so.
