So, after standing me up the day before without a phone call until much later in the evening, he showed up this afternoon. I had only spoken with him on the phone and was very honest with him. I let him know that this was finish work on an exterior paint job, the higher areas that required climbing on the roof. Most contractors won’t take the time to bother with a job that doesn’t include the entire job. I was realistic about that and hoped to sweeten the deal by referring the contractor, if they did a good job, to other residents in the Home Owner’s Association of 120 homes. Folks are always looking for good help and I’m happy to refer when I find a good one. Well, I had a feeling this guy would just high ball us because he really didn’t want the job or because he thought we were rich or something. Sure enough that’s exactly what happened. My husband showed him the job and remarked that Tom seemed very up tight and would call us with the bid. He texted me and said that our roof was steep and dangerous and that he’d have to set up scaffolding which would cost $ 3000. That number is completely rediculous. We had gotten a bid to do the entire second story, with our paint, for a little over $ 1000. last year. So, we knew he was gouging us. The fact of the matter is that the areas to be painted, a double gable, can’t be reached via scaffolding. You have to have a safety harness, be roped in and have a roof ladder secured to get the job done. We’d had roof care contractors on our roof the week before and that is what they did and they explained it all to us. The roof care contracters did a great job and I was happy to refer them to several neighbors. I told Tom he didn’t have to high ball us if he didn’t want the job, he could just say he didn’t want to do it and I thanked him for his time. He called me a cheep skate and chewed me out for him having to come out to see the job, like I’d inconvenienced him. I was shocked! I told him I’d have to Unilocal about that and he his response was«lol.» I promptly blocked him. What a jerk.
