Expensive, even for premium chocolate. But the flavors are amazing. I got the hazelnut mushroom, and the hazelnut toffee. Perfect flavors and textures. These chocolates are to be savored! The store is small and nicely organized. However, I find that the lighting does not highlight the confections all that well. If you are like me and eat chocolates with your eyes first, and mouth second, you are going to miss out here.

Humboldt Chocolate — hidden away in the back, behind the spiral fountain in old town, you will find a great little chocolate shop. Smells of fresh chocolate and spices when you walk in the door. We were greeted with a smile and a friendly conversation as we built a custom assortment to go. We picked a few of several styles of the offers they had the day of our visit, as we wanted to sample more than one of the types of chocolates they offered. Below are our findings, and in order of preference. ~ The Macadamia Buttercrunch Toffee, amazingly delicious, crunchy and great macadamia nut flavor, with a rich toffee that had just the right amount of crunch and melt, this was our favorite and we wish we had gotten more. ~ The Creams, everyone of them and we sampled four different flavors, was true to flavor and as creamy smooth as they could be, with a nice fresh milk chocolate shell that melted nicely and was sweet to the taste. They were all great. ~ The Melt-a-ways, again we sampled three different flavors and all were delicious. They all had a great fresh rich chocolate flavor and taste. With the lemon and raspberry both coming in together at the top of our list for flavor. This is a clean, small shop that is well laid out with a nice selection of quality, small batch, hand made chocolates and candies. We spent about $ 20 bucks and it was worth every penny. Not really sure what the one guy was complaining about with the«from 2 Christmases ago» comparison and«go to See’s» — yes, See’s is an awesome west coast chocolatier, however… Humboldt Chocolate is also an awesome west coast chocolatier from behind the Redwood Curtain and well worth the stop and a visit. They will custom build an assortment for you of anything they offer from a single piece on up. A Solid 4.5 Stars ~ rounded up for community support. 265

The place smells wonderful and the gal behind the counter is really sweet. The chocolates are really not good. Imagine that box of Russell Stover left over from 2 Christmases ago that you just found in your closet. Wife and I spent about $ 20 on a pretty good sized hand picked variety sample of the products. Each one was mehhh at best and inedible at worst. Seriously the candy lacked flavor, and it tasted like they used imitation flavorings. Go with Sees. Don’t bother with this place.

My favorite chocolate ever(: it smells amazing when you walk in, and it’s made right there. My step dad always gets my mom a treat from there on special holidays(: I love it here.

Love the chocolate. The smell of sweetness is a little too overpowering for me(not in a good way). While the chocolate is superior, the space is small so plan accordingly if it is around a holiday!

Ok it’s a bit hard to find. But the chocolate is fresh and wonderful. The person working there is friendly and patient and helpful. She put together a wonderful custom dark chocolate box for my husbands birthday that he absolutely loved. The smell in the shop is to die for too!

The chocolate here is sooo delicious!!! They have many many many vegan options to choose from. There are no little vegan signs so you do have to ask what you can eat and what you can’t eat. However, every time i’ve gone in there, the person at the counter is extremely patient, nice, and helpful! A great experience for all. :)

I am a chocoholic, and since I moved to Eureka it’s taken a great deal of self-control not to run to Venlo every day and indulge my addiction! The chocolate is amazing, not only because it tastes so good, and is the perfect texture, but because it is so beautiful. The first time we went to this shop we couldn’t get over the chocolate boxes shaped like flowers, sea shells, logs, and yes — boxes. You can buy a chocolate box and fill it with chocolate(hint, hint!). Their chocolate bars are also wonderful — the dark chocolate almond bar has six segments, and each segment has a whole roasted almond — very nice. The aroma when you enter the shop is amazing, and the clerk is so helpful. Every so often DH and I indulge ourselves and go to Venlo for a few treats — assorted chocolates we hand pick. And we can always get candy bars at our friendly veterinarian, where they are sold as a fundraiser. I’m so happy Eureka is home to the best chocolate in the world!

Crazy perfection. This place has the nicest young woman working at the front counter. She knew in detail about every piece available! I was looking for some gifts to send back home and God she was patient. When I finally knew about every chocolate offered I decided on two mini gift boxes ANDDDDD a box of VEGAN chocolates! Which is generally hard to find, but there’s was perfect and made with rice milk. There is a perfect combination of nuts n chews, salted, creams and bars. It’s so petite and wonderful, they made a customer for life.

One of the best things in Eureka! This charming little place was pointed out to me by the nice lady at the Loleta cheese factory. It is a little tricky to find, but I was very pleased by the quality of the chocolate I found there. To help people calibrate to my taste: I avoid Hersheys, Palmers and Russel Stoeffers, but cannot figure out the big deal about Godiva. I like Sees for a nicer chocolate, and Dove and Cadbury for a mid-level chocolate. I think this is much better than Godiva. The dark chocolate truffle was delicious! I got my mom a box.

I saw the small sign for Chocolate in Old Town Eureka and decided to look into it. Shop isn’t in the best location, they go by word of mouth. Most of their stuff is made there in the back. Shop is small and was warm inside when I went. I recommend that they give out samples! That would help a lot in getting customers to buy some chocolate. I like that it’s made in Eureka & I like to help small business. I did get to try a Dark Chocolate Blueberry — I liked it. Many blueberries inside the dark chocolate. I only get 2 small bags of the cheap chocolates(priced cheaper because they are older chocolate — one bag had some bloom on some pieces) 4pcs for 99c. Got 2 bags for $ 1.98. They take credit cards, I paid Cash. Hrs: M-Sat 10 – 5:30 Sun 12 – 4 Arts Alive(1st Sat of every Month) 10 – 9 They are on Twitter & Facebook.

As a person who spends a great deal of time thinking about chocolate, eating chocolate, and reminiscing about recently eaten chocolate, I know what I’m talking about here. This is a great chocolate shop. There are lots of elegant choices, and I really like their seasonal items. You’ve got to love a selection of truffles in a box that looks like a mortarboard for graduation or a set of chocolate tools for Father’s Day. I always like to get my little girl’s Easter candy here-just a few really adorable delicious pieces rather than a bunch of dime store stuff that’s made of truly questionable ingredients. Venlo has vegan and organic choices too.

Venlo chocolate is a great locally made chocolate store capturing the heart of funky humboldt bay with their specialty choclates made to look like starfish, fish and our redwood forests own banana slug! They also have a great selection of nuts and chews, which are my fave. The moment you walk through the doors you get the thick aroma of delicious chocolate being made on the back, which you can see from behind the counter. You are also greeted by the lovely store clerk who knows her choclates. All in all its a great sweet tooth experience!

I love chocolate and Venlo Chocolates’ has exactly that! You walk into the small shop and are embraced with the aroma of chocolate! My boyfriend and I explored all the chocolates in the store and discovered that the chocolate here is locally made. What a gem! The lady working here was so friendly and knowledgeable about the chocolates within the shop. We eventually decided on the chocolate pecan candies. 3 for 99 cents! You can’t beat that! If you’re having a chocolate craving, check out Venlo Chocolates.

I’m glad they put up a sign by the street, or I’d never have found this place. I was walking around downtown Eureka and saw a sign with an arrow that read«chocolate.» I’m not one to disobey a sign, so I headed into Venlo. There was a screen door to the area where they make the chocolates, so I was pleased to see that it’s truly locally made. I got two truffles to share with my bf. First was a ‘mushroom’, a cute hazelnut cream truffle that looks like a little fungi. Very cute, and very tasty. The hazelnut flavor was good, and the texture was creamy. Second was a ‘milk mocha french cream.’ It was indeed mocha, with a nice coffee flavor and a creamy milk chocolate outer layer. The cream was not as smooth as the hazelnut, but it was delicious. Great place to get locally made European-style chocolates.
