There are certain pieces of furniture that I could do a respectable job of fixing up, but those are tucked away in the bedroom or office. The grown-up furniture, the things that get used at a dinner party, that stuff gets taken to Devontry. I’ll be perfectly frank, it is extremely probable that you will spend way less buying new furniture than restoring your old stuff, so you’ll have to do some cost-benefit analyses beforehand. And the guys at Devontry are perfectly upfront about how expensive it is too. My wife and I were gifted some old tavern-style chairs; the joints were rickety, the varnish was discolored and chipping, basically they were a terrible eyesore. We brought them in for repair and to have the varnish stripped and a white wash applied. You see where this is going, right? After the old varnish and stain had been removed, they found a beautifully grained walnut. They gave us a call and begged us not to whitewash the chairs and of course we didn’t need much convincing after we saw the wood. In the end, the chairs were simply stained to bring out the grain and sealed. We didn’t know what we had on our hands, but when the gentlemen at Devontry found it, they asked us to do what would maintain that beauty. They love what they do and it shows in their craftsmanship.

Just to be clear, quality restoration and repair of old wooden furniture is not cheap. Never has, never will be. That old adage«you get what you pay for» was never more appropriate. We recently brought in two dirty tavern chairs to be repaired and refinished. The finished products were amazing. One of the chair legs was fractured and when we got it back, we couldn’t even find where the break had been. The second chair was missing a spindle and the new one that was put in matches perfectly. The discoloration from decades of use is gone now and we can enjoy the rich wood. The craftsmanship of Devontry Workshop is second to none.
