If you are a parent or a younger person looking for help with intense anxiety issues, family issues, eating disorders or any number of problems, this practice is a great place to begin. From the outset, I was thrilled with Matthew Selekman’s approach(he’s the founder of PCS) He takes the position that most of the young people he sees are normal kids experiencing difficult life transitions, not mentally ill people with problems. He coaches the young person and their families on how to create positive adaptive behaviors to cope with anxiety/stress so that they are able to walk away from his practice in 1 – 3 years feeling like they have the tools to move on alone. This is a HUGELY beneficial aspect for most young people who are often vehemently opposed to being seen as ‘a problem child’ or ‘mentally ill’. This was certainly true in our case: my kid just needed to be shown a few great coping strategies as well as some ways to embrace his unique gifts & abilities. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Matthew Selekman. He made all the difference for our family and my kid still thinks of him as a surrogate Dad/spirit guide. He is a genius. If you cannot visit him, you might check out some of his articles & books online.
