A small path that needs to grow Phoenix Bike path is a 3.5 mile bike path that was opened in 1999. It was built on the old New Haven railroad line that was built back in the 1850’s. The path is paved with asphalt the entire way on is still smooth and easy to ride on. At three and a half miles the path is over before you know it but it does have some interesting views of the water, town and cool looking gigantic hurricane barrier. After biking the path you can also go down to Fort Phoenix or ride south to West Island, which would add another 15 or 20 miles to your journey. Because of the path’s proximity to the ocean there are few hills or curves and it’s a good place for kids, older people or folks with disabilities to get some biking in. I see quite a few of the adult three wheel bikes and wheelchairs are common. Not a place to ride if you want to go warp nine but it is a very relaxing and pleasant little trip. I keep hearing about plans that they want to extend the path west through the towns of Mattapoisett and Marion all the way to Wareham and eventually to the Cape Cod Canal. That would be a fantastic trip and a great achievement. Of course I hear about lots of plans for bike paths but few actually seem to be completed. Hopefully this will be action and not just grandiloquent verbiage. We shall see.
