Lights bridges and cooling towers The Borden Flats is a spark plug type of light that was built back in 1881. It sits in the mouth of the Tauton River and was very necessary at one time because of the large number of ships that use to travel the river to get to the numerous textile mills in Fall River. The light was automated in 1963 and is now in private hands. It was restored and repainted about ten years ago and now has a nice bright, red stripe around the middle, giving it a very distinctive look. The little lighthouse sits just south of the looming Braga Bridge and doesn’t really have a convenient place to view it except on the bridge. And trying to view the light while getting across the old bridge can be a bit dangerous. It’s best seen from the Tauton River, assuming you can stand the nasty water that flows through there. The river has cleaned up over the years but decades of abuse from all the mills and factories has taken it’s toil. A nice little light that many people see from the bridge but few get to get close to. If you look from the east side you will see the monstrous cooling towers of the filthy coal fueled power plant over in Seekonk. Quite a contrast to the diminutive and historic lighthouse.
