Kimberly Maternity is no more, a decision of the business owner who determined Woodward frontage in Ferndale was better suited to contemporary fashions. Now known as K-Flair, the street wear sister of Saginaw’s Kimberly Maternity, they specialize in dresses, shirts, and pants by lesser-known designers. Accessories in the most current trends, like J. Crew style burst necklaces and sky high heels, round out the offerings. K-Flair pulled me in with a selection of vivid maxi dresses in bold colours and attractive prints I had trouble believing were for expectant moms. Well, turns out they are intended for everyone, but the owner’s mother helped pick out two or three styles that would get me through early summer without needing an extra metric ton of fabric. A fitting room in the back stock area is well kitted out with a large mirror and plenty of room to turn about for a full effect. Dresses on my most recent visit included tie-dyed cotton maxis and flowy bohemian styles(of which I bought one as soon as I saw it on) to minis with daring cutouts best viewed on the dance floor. The owner’s strong idea for colour and form really tells through the boutique’s options, and while not everything is for me, K-Flair can cater to quite a few different tastes. It’s well worth checking out if you exhausted the usual standbys or you are sick of looking like everyone else. Lovely service all around, as I wasn’t rushed or hurried to try on something not quite to my liking. Helene provided tips about upcoming events, including a fashion showcase on Friday nights for invitees, and ability to order special items. Kimberly Maternity has an online site; I’m not sure whether K-Flair does as well. Though not fitting the bill for what I came in for, I nevertheless found this a charming store to the south end of the Woodward shopping district that well deserves a top by if you’re hunting for a unique outfit or just a special something to spice up your wardrobe. Parking: free on the street, paid meters around the corner.
