Just went there to practice putt, range and play 9. Well taken care of, greens fairways and tee boxes, are nice. Awesome place to play. Hot though!

I hesitate to write this review because it’s like your favorite fishing hole… you don’t wanna give up the secret, that Elkins Ranch is. Can get busy at times though… the secrets out I guess. .damn!

Elk’ is a great course but something has to be done about the greens. In the afternoon the greens are so bumpy from footprints it’s like putting on a blanket over sand. Recently there were footsteps ½″ deep all over the green — No, I’m not exaggerating. It was like playing behind Herman Munster. I don’t see this at any other golf course. I believe the greens are too wet in the morning making them too soft. Why should someone who plays in the afternoon not get the same flat green with a fresh cup that players had in the morning? Solution #1: water in the late evening so they’re not so soft in the morning; Solution #2: move the pin positions in the afternoon so all the morning footprints are out of play.

Just played in a tournament here yesterday. The course is in good shape. I saw a couple dead spots, but nothing that really got in the way. I wasn’t a huge fan of the lake that cut into the fairway over a hill(where you could not see it; I think it was the 12th?), and it wastes time for people to drive up to take a look and then come back to the ball to hit, so just be aware of it. Saw the cartgirl and marshal both at least a couple of times. If it weren’t so far away, I could see playing the course again. I heard several people rave about the cheeseburgers, but I didn’t get to try it since I was recording the final round of the Masters and there was a big screen on in the diner.

It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday afternoon round of golf and our round took nearly 5 hours. With that I had another great experience at Elkins Ranch. The employees were friendly as usually and the course is in excellent condition. It would have been nice to have cart service even though it’s the winter season. Having an adult beverage would have helped pass the time between the waits between the holes. I saw 1 marshal that day but the rate of play was still dragging. Fortunately a good burger at the turn always helps no matter what kind of score you’re posting. Elkins Ranch ~ great affordable golf, tasty burgers, tucked away in the groves of Fillmore.

Nice clean course, some challenging holes, some easy ones. There was only one hole that was very short. The best thing I liked about playing here was that it was quiet and not crammed with people. A group behind us came up on us and we let them play through. Other than that, everything flowed along nicely. I played here with my young son. Total cost for 2 of us was $ 80 including cart. This was high compared to the course in Santa Paula where we pay $ 22 for both with cart(super twilight and they do not charge for kids). So this was high compared to what I normally pay. I was here once and literally had to leave on the first hole due to an emergency and they refunded everything, no questions asked. So, the staff seems reasonable. There are a couple signs posted saying no outside alcohol or coolers. Not sure how strict they are on this. You cannot drive your cart to your car either, so you gotta lug everything to the cart. The burgers are good, about as good as you can get with a simple grill.

Played in a Tourney here Saturday morning with my buddy Rob. Dinardo Brothers Construction threw a great event. I played this course many years ago and it was in sad shape then. Call me a snob… but I used too Palm Springs and courses on Tropical Islands. I have to say though that the place was in Tip Top Shape. Fairways were lush and the greens were a little over lush… Managed to still squeak out a 90 with unreadable greens that needed a trimming. But it was a great day. The problem here is I’d rather drive to Palm Springs and play anywhere 2 hours away then drive through the canyon on the way to Moorpark. I guess if I lived in Moorpark this would be ideal. But I think the next time I play here will be another Golf tourney.

I marked it with 4 stars, but I would really give a 3.5 if I could. Elkins Ranch is a nice course in a small town with its fair share of pros and cons. Pros: –The course is kept in good condition –The course is balanced in terms of being challenging and easy enough not to scare people away –The holes have a nice mix of elevation changes, but not to the point of absurdity –The location of the course gives it charm –Unexpectedly delicious burgers! –Reasonably priced –Pleasant drive through the orange groves on 126 fwy Cons: –Slow play/poor time management on weekends –Putting surface speeds vary greatly(18th putts the truest since it was redone) –Gets unexpectedly windy in the afternoon, even when the weather report doesn’t say so –Dangerous at times because some fairways play very close to each other and have little protection from balls slicing/hooking into adjacent fairways –Out of the way, so people who don’t like to drive won’t be happy The weekdays are easy to get on, but the weekends can be rough. You can get a tee time, but hardly ever tee off on time. I’ve been there many times where I started well past my tee time. If you’re not in a hurry and have patience, it’s not a problem. Just don’t make any appointments after a round. The course is fun to play and I personally enjoy the drive in on the 126 fwy. The mix of even ground and gradual elevation changes, fair number of hazards, and reasonable price make this an enjoyable experience. Make sure you try the burger, too! It’s surprisingly good.
