It might be that there’s some sentimentality involved because I remember going to this type of restaurant with my family when I was a boy, but I love J&S. It’s the most stereotypical cafeteria you can imagine, with one big dining room and a big long line of food waiting to be piled on your plate, all a la carte style. The quality of the food is surprisingly nice. Even the times I’ve gone near closing time, I’ve gotten hot, fresh food off of the line, and always service with a smile. It’s a piece of Americana, no question, and I’ll keep going back as long as they keep letting me.

The food is very good, but that’s it!!! When a waiter come to your table and you are almost done dining it shows how«good» their service is. When you have to leave your table to go ask for sour cream and you«disturb» 2 employees that are chatting, they just point out where it is… No service… Bad bad bad!!!

I got take-out and the waitress was really nice. Sides are $ 1.35 and deserts are $ 1.99. Really cheap. Meats were like $ 4, but I didn’t get any of those. The only issue I had was that it is dark and smells like an old lady’s house that she’s been smoking in since the early sixties.

This is just Southern-style cafeteria food, but sometimes it’s what you want. We go to the J&S in Enka-Candler, not the one listed here in Fairview, though they are similar. Tonight I had chicken livers, a large serving, with mashed potatoes and green beans, which were a little over $ 6 for takeout, with a drink and before tip or tax. My wife had the broiled tilapia and fried okra($ 5.60 not including tax or tip.) So two dinners for around $ 12 plus 83 cents tax and a tap. You can’t do that at home for that amount. I also like the beef liver, the country style steak and sometimes the chicken pot pie. The pies, especially the custard pie when they have it, and iced tea are good, the staff is friendly, everything is clean and you can’t beat the price. If you live in the area, you’ll probably see somebody you iknow, especially if you’re over 50.

J&S Cafeteria is a canteen style place. You take a plastic tray, walk by the food display, get what you like you can choose from several starters, salads, main courses and deserts and get your selection registered on a check. Every item chosen goes on the check and adds to the total. However, the individual items are relatively inexpensive with a main course between $ 4 to $ 5. You can easily get a decent meal incl. a drink(no alcoholic drinks served as far as I could see) below $ 10. You pay when you leave and refills for the drinks are free. There is nothing wrong with the food itself, though it’s nothing special. The presentation of the food could be improved, just as the whole restaurant interior. The whole thing is pretty basic and seems a little dated. Also not a place where you should expect to meet youths, the restaurant seems to be more famous among elderly people.
