Oh god. I am so full. Of happiness. And Sushi… basically the same thing. Call in ahead of time. Long wait for sushi rolls, but so so worth it. I’ll be back to try their burgers and the loco moco!

A hidden gem of the Oregon coast. Was passing through when we spotted this food truck off the 101 in the New Old School Furniture parking lot. As previous reviewers state, the menu is varied. So much so, that they have two menus– one consisting purely of sushi and rolls, and the other of plates and burgers. I usually opt for the smaller plate, which still has way too much food for me.

Went to a taste of Hawaii today for lunch with my family. I had the bacon cheese burger, no bun. They wrapped it nicely in lettuce and not only was it huge but it was SODELICIOUS. I am so excited to try more of their burgers. Price were good and the owners were so friendly. You will not leave hungry or disappointed!

This place is ridiculously good. If I could make one complaint it would be that they changed from a restaurant to a food cart and kept the same prices. But why change when it’s always a 30 minute wait. Clearly their food is killing it and amazing!

Great find. Unique food truck. We arrived at 12:30 on a Tuesday and they were so busy it took 20 minutes for our food. I had Mahi Mahi tacos which were delicious. My husband ordered a burger which was juicy and worth the wait. Highly recommend. We enjoyed earring outside at their picnic table

This place is such a treat! Everything I’ve tried there(and I’ve tried quite a few things) is delicious beyond words! And if you appreciate good sushi, this is the place to go. The owners are so gracious and friendly. I highly recommend visiting this unassuming food truck the next time you’re in Florence. And if you’re a local who hasn’t been yet, go… now!

A popular scene from«When Harry Met Sally» involving Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner’s mom at Katz’s Deli in NY comes to mind when remembering the ORGASMIC burgers my partner and I had upon our first visit to the Taste of Hawaii food truck. Frankly, I’m amazed we didn’t leave puddles in our car seats. Did we heed Natasha’s friendly warning about the massive size of the burgers? Not so much. It had to have been the intoxicating aromas of Chef Christian’s masterful food. We figured we’d had half-pound burgers before. Sure. No problem. Did I use the term massive earlier? Ok. Right. On we go. It took about 20 minutes from the time that we drove up, glanced over the extensive and reasonably priced menu, submitted our order, paid and went back to our car for Natasha to run our order out to us. We were expecting these local, grass fed and organic beef burgers to be big. We even expected huge, what with being smothered by sweet red onion, tomato, lettuce, grilled pineapple, cheese, grilled SPAM, grilled lop chung, a fried egg and at least a quarter pound of mango chili pulled pork piled high on a sweet, fresh baked challah type roll. We did not, however, even fathom the enormity of this burger. It came with no sides and didn’t need them. It was juicy and packed with a sinful array of flavors. Thankfully they provided us with several napkins and paper towels. It’s incredibly delicious and well balanced without being overbearing. You literally taste every ingredient, and trust me, even the heartiest appetites will be challenged with finishing it in one sitting. We’ll definitely go back. Mahalo!

A Taste of Hawaii features an enormous menu filled with creative dishes, which the chef prepares to perfection using interesting and often unexpected, yet pleasantly contrasting flavors. Patrons may find it beneficial to take part in Taco Tuesdays, in which each oversized taco is one dollar off an already economical price. The macaroni salad that comes with many of the dishes is awesome with a bit of teriyaki. The seafood is fresh and the sushi is exceptional — better than any I’ve eaten in New York. For those so inclined, they offer are an array of inventive grass fed beef burgers. If one of those doesn’t fill you up, you may have to go straight to the cow. Their daily specials are the best — my favorite is the gyro. My wife and I prefer this place to any other of the eateries on the Oregon Coast!

This place is truly amazing! First off the owners are incredibly upbeat and friendly. Expect to wait a while because the food is made to order. It is worth the wait. The menu is vast and I have no idea how they fit all the ingredients into the truck. I ordered the Peanut Mango Chicken with rice and macaroni salad, my grandmother, the scallop tacos ala carte. My husband, being a hamburger connoisseur, went straight for Da Kine Big Fat Juicy Burgers, «420 Burger». Everything was scrumptious! I really do mean everything. The presentation was even beautiful and it’s a food truck!!! It was the first time I had ever seen my husband not able to finish a hamburger on the first attempt. He did end up finishing it just later that day. I highly recommend this place. I am actually trying to figure out a rout back to California that involves going back by.

Last time I was on the north shore of Oahu was 1991. My point? I can’t compare the food served at A Taste of Hawaii to anything I remember from that visit. But I can tell you it is delicious, nicely presented, and served up by two friendly, hard-working folks who really care about their customers. First visit my husband and i shared the Ahi Platter and it’s a good thing we decided to share it because the portion size was, well it was more than enough for two. I had the Prawn Taco on my second visit and it was amazing — fresh, perfect degree of spicy. Next visit — burger and fries.

After 45 years on Oahu’s north shore, it turns out that Florence Oregon is home to a food truck that rivals, if not betters the plate lunch hangouts in Hawaii. Christian and Natasha are super friendly and accommodating, but the final judgement is the food, is it not? all I can say is oh-my-golly you can’t go wrong! We have eaten here ten times in six months and the worst entrée was a 4.9 stars out of five. the best were sixes! Even my good buddy, Japanese descent, from Hawaii, thought their tongkatsu was, well, prefect. Just perfect. The fish tacos are to die for. and the loco moco raises the bench mark of a local favorite… best I ever had. Hats off to Christian n Natasha for bringing so much Aloha to the Oregon coast. We will be eating here for years to come after moving here five months ago. With warm aloha, Gary n Cyndie

New to the area, I stopped by to enjoy the sushi. Since I was blown away by neighboring Ichiban who was fabulous, I thought I would give them a try. They were out of sushi, and suggested the chicken with rice.(The woman at the window made a point to put down Ichiban, which I thought was unprofessional.) So, with appetite, home I went. I was VERY disappointed. The chicken was overcooked, the rice was a solid, dry mass. The sauce tasted like it was sitting in a fridge too long… it was NOT worth it, yuk. So, since they asked me to tell them what I thought, I contacted them on their Facebook page and politely indicated that the food was far below my expectations. As a former executive chef myself, I was again disappointed, this time by the lack of customer appreciation. The response? «Sorry you did not like it, the rest of our customers do.» I actually would have tried it again if it had not been for that comment. Very poor business practice. «Don’t like it? Don’t come back. We sure don’t need you.»

My first visit to this food truck was excellent. We ordered spam musubi and one of the sushi rolls(Aloha Airlines from Hawaii to Portland?) The spam musubi was as good as any I’ve ever had, but the roll was unbelievable. Smoked salmon, cream cheese, fresh mango, cucumber, topped with guava glaze, slivered onions, and more mango slices. This roll was seriously in my top ten culinary experiences in my life. The owners were very friendly and service was fast. I will definitely be eating here again.

The Pacific Coast Highway, from San Diego to Seattle has a thousand eateries and mediocrity is the norm for most of them. Southern California of course has a majority of the best because of the wealthy demographics. So far on the northern California and Oregon coast I have been disappointed more times than not. The problem is that many people who become restaurant owners, do so when they retire from some other career. But then there are those who are passionate about excellent food and see it as an art form rather than the daily grind. With the foody explosion of the nineties and beyond, the average palette has become more sophisticated because fans have learned how to cook and experience culinary adventures at home in their own kitchens with competitive pricing in the down economy making it affordable to eat out more. The Food Channels showcasing international cuisine, and creating Chef Rock Stars has fueled this renaissance sweeping our nation. However, because of hobbyist owners who retired to beach cities and other tourist areas, average fare with average service and overpriced menus is mostly what you will find unless your palette demands more. «Seek and you shall find!» Exploring the Oregon coast, I have found in Florence Oregon another Restaurant on wheels that has risen above mediocrity to excellence. Aloha Sushi(aka) Taste Of Hawaii, has passionate and friendly owner operators who have successfully taken American, Hawaiian, Japanese, Seafood, Sushi, Vegetarian & Vietnamese styles creating a fusion concept that is delicious and unique. Located on Highway 101 in the Old School Furniture center, you will find Chef Christian Jakobsen and wife Natasha very serious about their passion. I had heard time and time again I needed to try their cuisine. I finally gave in and am very pleased I tried them out. I would have gone sooner, but I had been given glowing reports on other eateries in the area, and they were disappointing. Their menu looked great with many options to choose from.(see link below)
I ordered the«Sweet & Spicy Mango Chicken» …This dish is quick fried chicken(boneless) glazed with their unique chili mango sauce, fresh mango, garlic, sweet red pepper, raisins, peanuts, sesame seeds, asian spices, in a bed of fresh tossed garlic sauteed cabbage. The chicken was moist inside and crispy on the outside even though it was smothered in the chili sauce glaze. The batter did not lose the fresh fried crunchy texture. Most of the chicken was hidden underneath so as you brought a piece up, you could decide what part of the medly you wanted in each bite. I experimented with one of each and then mixed the combinations up. The raisins fused great with the peanuts and spicy chili. The cabbage was fresh and crisp. A mound of steamed rice was set next to the entrée, which I prefer rather than the dish on top of the rice. The other side was a delicious macaroni salad with very subtle but tasty seasoning.
The main dish was both Tropical and Asian at the same time with undertones of Caribbean influence in layers of contrasting flavors and juxtaposed textures that made the fusion work perfectly. It was excellent! I ordered the small plate which was only $ 7.00 and had it not been so delicious I would have ordered something else to write about, but alas I was too full, the small order was more than enough. I look forward to going back soon and update this very cool experience… stay tuned! see link… tasteofhawaii.net — See more at:
