This review is for September 2014. I’m a fan of our state park systems. Savoy Mountain is a short drive for me yet feels so remote. It truly encourages me to put aside the world and relax. Very friendly and helpful staff, park was quite clean and the hiking trails easily found. The review would be 5 star, except for having been camped in a tent, next to a large travel trailer. Though the owners were respectful, their running generator noise and smell detracted from the peace of the visit.

This is a pretty campground set on an old orchard. The staff was friendly and helpful. Not all the campsites are that private, but we had site 21. the most private of them all. If you go I recommend this site.

This was the third or forth different DCR park that we’ve stayed at during the opening and/or closing weekend of the season. We stayed for three nights over Columbus Day weekend, the last three nights that the park was open. Though it was technically fully booked, at least a third of the campers didn’t show up, leaving us with lots of privacy on our first two nights! The park rangers on duty over the weekend were helpful and incredibly friendly. The camping sites are perfect walking distance to all of the trails and a nice mid-point if you plan on hiking several in one day. We enjoyed the Busby trail as well as doing some exploring around Bog Pond. Our big regret was saving Tannery Falls for our last morning and being surprised by a sudden bout of rain. Oh well, it’ll give us something to return for! We stayed at site #29, which shares a long pathway(sloped, so it isn’t good for a tent, but would be great for a few AWD cars) with site #28(a beautiful grassy spot that we’d prefer over #29). It also backs up(about 10′ of woods separating them) to site #30, which is a small space looking out onto the one-lane road and up the hill to the bathrooms. All of the outer spaces were moderately private with trees on three sides of them. The spaces that are in the center of the park are, as others indicate, very much out in the open. It’s a rolling apple orchard with very few trees in it, so it’s excellent for RVs, but maybe not the best for tents. Finally, the bathrooms were well within what I’d expect for a DCR facility, though the showers were the dingiest that I’ve experienced(bring a pair of flip flops!). That being said, there was never a shortage of paper towels, toilet paper, or hot water. There are also beautiful large sinks outside of each of the two bathrooms that are meant for washing dishes. The dumpsters and recycling containers are located at the entrance to the camp site loop and are an easy five-minute or less walk from any of the sites.

We went in September after Labor Day, so bear that in mind while reading this review. Pros: — The sites were quiet and private. — The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. — The firewood was cheap. — The scenery was beautiful. — Good hiking nearby(once you find it). Cons: — There weren’t many bathrooms and showers(which was okay after Labor Day but might have been a pain in July). — The path to and from the bathrooms was not lit at all(I don’t mind minimal light, we are getting back to nature after all but it made me a little anxious to have NO light on the path).

You know those movies where a group of attractive twenty-somethings decides to go for a fun weekend camping, but instead they end up in a creepy dark forest completely lost and cut off from humanity? And then they realize they are running out of gas and have no food? And then they get turned into human centipedes or otherwise disemboweled by Jack-the-Ripper wannabes? This is what was going through my mind when we tried to find this campsite in the pitch black darkness after a long day. The website, which as of today has not been updated, states«Please note: Shaft Rd, the main access road off of Route 2 was damaged in Tropical Storm Irene so all customers will need to access the campground from Route 116 in Savoy.» DONOTPAYATTENTIONTOTHIS. Route 2 has been repaired, and I guarantee you that if you try to take Route 116 there, it will take you ATLEAST another hour and your tiny car may not survive the potholes. If you suck at directions like me, you may also get lost and incredibly frustrated. The campground itself is mediocre. It’s not really remote enough to justify the long drive, and conversely its not really close enough to anything interesting. It has some poorly marked hiking trails that take you to nice views of the nearby ponds. Also, the trail maps must be wrong because«Balanced Rock» was nowhere near where it should have been based on the map.

Convenient campground for spending a day or two, but since the camp sites are extremely close to each other there is a lot of noise that travels. So if you are looking for a total get away from humanity this place is not for you. Camp ground is kept clean and there are good hiking trails(but the hiking trails are extremely poorly marked and the maps are misleading).
