My 84-year-old mother-in-law was in need of new hearing aids. She just moved back up from Florida, and also in need of new doctors. I did a quick search of hearing aid folks in the Flushing area, and came up with Acousticon. And Ira Dananberg is now on my list of «why local Queens doctors are the best asset NYC has in the world.» Here’s the thing: old people with hearing loss need — and deserve — patience, concentration, and dignity. A lot of doctors rush through visits, talk to the home health attendant or family member, and ignore or demean their actual patient so they can get on their way. When you find a professional who treats their patients with respect, hold on to them — they are worth every penny. Ira spent almost 90 minutes with my MIL. And more importantly, he never, ever rushed her, even when she wanted things explained a couple of times. He let her describe her concerns, and didn’t put words in her mouth. He made sure she knew her options in hearing aids, and didn’t press any particular brand or style on her — in fact, he recognized that she might be more comfortable with a style that she was familiar with(even if it wasn’t the newest, hottest item), and gave her options in the style that she would adapt to the most quickly. It turns out, Ira purchased the business from his father, who was in Flushing doing the same work for about 30+ years. How do I know this? Because my MIL was staring at his certificates, and announced that she was pretty sure she was familiar with his name, and that she’d been there before back in the 1980’s, when she was working in the neighborhood. That made her feel safe and comfortable. And it made me feel happy and thrilled: Queens doctors who know their neighborhoods and have lived through their changes are doctors who know their patents and the environments in which they live. With all the rapid changes happened, especially in Flushing, this longevity is a great asset. And if you live out of the area, but are desperately searching for help for a relative who lives in the neighborhood, Ira Denanberg and Acousticon are what you’re looking for. Yeah, I know some people want fast and efficient service. And my personal experience with Acousticon is that they would absolutely provide that as well. But let’s face it: it’s our mothers, fathers, elderly family members and next door neighbors who need(and deserve) patience as they are dealing with the challenges of losing their hearing. Ira Denanberg is the go-to guy in Flushing. Your family members will thank you.
