As a long-time aficionado of Sacto’s art scene, I felt my heart sag today when I bore witness to this, Folsom’s attempt at Second Saturday. The event takes place on «Folsom’s Historic Sutter Street.» Oooh, sounds exciting doesn’t it? Twas not. This street is, from what I can tell, Old Sacramento condensed into a few blocks, minus the river and all the cool restaurants/shops/people. The businesses on this street are so incredulously«folksy», they unintentionally mock themselves. Judging solely by this stretch of land, this city has to be the mountiest non-mountain-town I’ve come across in the entire state. On to the art walk itself: from what I could tell, it was just-another-day in old-town Folsom, plus several people painting on the sidewalks. Not *on* the sidewalks, but painting, while standing outside. Yes. Moving forth. There were an additional couple-hundred people total walking the street, I estimate. Which, in a normal city, would be an unimpressive number, but here in Folsom is considered a «crowd.» Live ragtime music. Lotta country bumpkin. Lotta honkies. The art? Well, if you like supporting local artists, go for it, but uh… none for me, thanks. The theme for June(yep, they have themes) was automobiles, so they had a 20-odd procession of old cars drive down the street. Verrry exciting. All in all, a lackluster experience. But an experience it was. I will not go again, and I question if I will ever visit this city for a reason other than outlet shopping. Guess the mountie lifestyle isn’t for me. Darn.
