DId you know we have nesting Bald eagles right here in Fort Collins? Sometimes up to 65 pair! this year I have seen at least 14. I enjoyed seeking a couple doing a mating flight. and then another time I witnessed two eagles try to get dinner by dive bombing a goose stuck out on the frozen lake. Fortunately the goose got away and slide to the safety of the near by grasses. The trails around the SE side of the lake is closed when the eagles arrive. So the viewing is only available form the lake dock straight down the walk way from the ranger station and restrooms. I was told from a knowledgable local that the best viewing time is at dusk when all the eagles return from the days hunt. The eagles arrive sometime in Dec and are around until their fledglings fledge, a few months later. So take advantage of this wonderful natural attraction, dress warm and bring some good binoculars. Thanks to the city of Fort Collins for having the insight to preserve these wonderful areas for all nature lovers to enjoy.

Fossil Creek Reservoir is located in south Fort Collins. If you go on south I-25 from Fort Collins and exit at the Windsor exit(Sorry. I don’t know the exit number) and head west you will be there very shortly. It is on the right, certainly no more than three to five miles to the turn off. The Fossil Creek Reservoir has a huge emphasis on keeping the space natural. That means there is no biking or pets and certainly no boating allowed. Only walking. That also means that the reservoir is kept natural and is therefore not all that clear to look down into from the docks. The main point of going to the reservoir is to take a nice, brisk and short walk to the wildlife blinds where you can observe the various birds that make the reservoir there home. It is refreshing to go to the two blinds and watch the water fowl do their thing and see them not be disturbed by humans. As a result of the emphasis of keeping things natural there is hardly anyone that seems to come out here. That makes this the perfect place to have a nice meditative walk without loud motor boats or screaming kids. There are plenty of other lakes and reservoirs where you get plenty of that here in the area.
