I grew up in this community and have many fond memories of playing at Gilbert-Stephenson public park. Granted, it’s improved a bit since I was a child, but many of the most memorable sections remain: in the front, a very large playground surrounded by a sand walking track. As one moves to the back of the park, there are a few tennis courts(which are usually not terribly crowded), a public pool(which can get crowded on a hot summer’s day), and an additional concrete track on the opposite side of a creek in the very back portion of the park. I frequently run here, which is a bit boring.(I feel like a bit of a lab rat running in circles for that long). The track(which can get very crowded during the day) is also a really odd length: 4 ½ laps = 1 mile. *Scratches head* I mean, we ain’t real good at math around here; but, still, I thought sports were something we valued above and beyond most things… Anyway, that odd fact makes keeping track of your distance slightly more interesting. Also, there’s a large pavilion with picnic tables that can be reserved(rented?) through the City of Fort Oglethorpe. Overall, I enjoy this park. To boot, I just discovered the new Fort Oglethorpe Multi-Use Trail which originates near the walking track in the back of the park. It snakes its way out the front entrance of the park, across the street, and behind some business until it emerges beside City Hall(500 City Hall Dr, Fort Oglethorpe, GA30742). It’s not a terribly long trail(and I wish it was longer), but it’s a good first step for this community.
