I had taken my computer to Geek Squad in Fenway and was told my motherboard was shot — it would cost more to fix than to buy a new computer. I happened to pass Marathon on my way to the Natick mall and figured what the hell, the computer’s still in the car, might as well give it a try. Long story short, they charged me $ 180 bucks and now my computer is as good as new. I’m actually kind of angry at myself for going to Geek Squad in the first place; I consider myself a fairly savvy consumer, and Geek Squad’s conflict of interest is glaringly obvious. If you’re told your computer is beyond repair while standing in a Best Buy, chances are you’re going to buy your new computer at that Best Buy — instead of being satisfied with your piddling $ 180 for repairs they’d rather scam you into dropping 1K on a new computer instead. Anyhoo, I’m never going to darken the door of a Geek Squad again and I suggest you follow suit; big conglomerates aren’t going to treat consumers with respect until we demand it.
