Simply one of the best in town. Can’t go wrong anywhere, but, as the name implies, the soup and tacos are the best. If you come regularly they’ll learn your name and«regular.» Great place.

Stopped in today for the first time. The pork pupusas are so good. The chips and guacamole are super yummy. Loved the tortilla soup, but the shrimp tacos lack flavor and were disappointing. We definitely will be back again.

Since my original review I’ve been back a few more times and Soup & Taco is now one of my favorites in Fredericksburg. I actually make the drive up from Ashland occasionally just because I’m craving their salsa. It’s unlike any I’ve had elsewhere, and very, very good. The employees do take some getting used to. One in particular comes off as being a bit angry or something, but it turns out she is very nice, very accommodating, and, I suspect, very tired. The restaurant stays busy and she’s always here. Recommendation: Come during off-peak hours(mid-afternoon, for example) for the best chance at getting a table.

Soup and Taco is my «go to» whenever I have friends or family visiting. Their menu has a decent amount of choices to fit the palates of the mundane to the adventurous. While it does get crowded, they do a good job of rotating people through… most locals know not to linger. I had in all my years never had a fish taco until I came here, now no matter what else I order, I get one of those, too. Such a better choice than the«white cheese» places that serve the same crap. Do yourself a favor, just go…

Stop by on a Tuesday afternoon so the place was mostly empty. I liked that the had some vegetarian options which is great. I ordered the black bean and cheese pupusas. My friend ordered the chicken taco salad. We shared a side of the Yuca fries with jalapeño mayo I enjoyed the yucca fries the most, it paired well with the mostly mayo(very little jalapeño taste) dip. It was pretty pricey tho for the amount of yucca we actually got. My bean pupusas left much to be desired. The pupusas alone tho fresh, lacked much flavor and salt. But the pickled cabbage that came on the side was very good! The other red sauce, not so much. My friend didn’t really care for her taco salad. The shell was soggy and oily. Maybe we will try something else next time.

Great food! The chicken empanadas, carnitas tacos, and steak tacos were our favorites. Small but worth the wait. If you love authentic Latin American food, you’ll be very happy here.

My husband and I finally got to try Soup and Taco. It’s not a lot of room to sit down on the inside so a lot of times we would pass by and it would be packed. We finally got a window where they weren’t super busy and it was very good. They start by giving you chips and salsa. The salsa was very good. It had like a smoked flavor and tasted very fresh. One of the main things I noticed about Soup and Taco is that everything tasted so fresh and homemade. I truly felt that I received a fresh, authentic homemade meal. Our entrees that we selected were the Chicken Enchiladas & Chicken Tacos. Both dishes were very good. I also ordered a side of rice and beans. The rice was good but the beans were amazing. Both were homemade and seasoned perfectly. Those beans were soo good! Overall a good place to eat for authentic Mexican food! My husband and I will go back and would suggest it to others!

This is a great little restaurant, on Caroline St in the middle of downtown historic Fredericksburg, VA. My wife and I eat here regularly, and it’s great. Their pico del gallo is awesome. All of their food is fresh, and delicious. Don’t let the small size or décor fool you b/c this is a serious restaurant with a laid back atmosphere, friendly staff and authentic Latino food. Having lived in Yuma, AZ for 3 years, and travelled throughout Mexico, this restaurant would be right at home near or south of the border.

It is absolutely the best food I’ve had in Fredericksburg. Fresh ingredients. Really really good food. I started my meal with a basket of fresh tortilla chips and homemade salsa, a little kick but not too spicy. I then had the black bean soup. It was quite delicious. It had a little crème fraîche on it. Because it’s called soup and taco I decided not to experiment. So I ordered steak tacos. The tortilla was fresh the steak delicious. The steak was cooked at a perfect temperature and consistency. I had a Tamarindo to drink and a glass of water. I apologize for not being able to tell you about dessert. however, I was having such a good time I decided to just leave it there. If they charge more I would pay it. I think that’s the highest compliment I can give. Enjoy!

This place has been my default favorite Mexican/Salvadoran/good-food place for several years. There are the usual Mexican dishes such as enchiladas and tacos, and delicious Salvadoran pupusas. The big difference is the daily menu, a spin on the traditional. Try Argentine empanadas, or yuca fries. Be prepared to wait 10 to 15 minutes during peak meal times. Still worth the wait.

My wife and I have been going to Soup and Tacos for 2 years now. I go for the deliciously mouth melting fish tacos. The fish they use is grilled tilapia. Accompanying the grilled fish on the taco are pica de gallo, cheese. I usually request avocado as well. The fish tacos never disappoints. Get two tacos with the soup of the day, it’ll fill your belly and put a smile on your face!

I have been to Soup and Taco dozens of times, and every meal has been delicious. Admittedly, I have only tried the Soup, and the Tacos, but they are superb. My only complaint is the restaurant size, which, while very charming, can also make the wait quite long during peak hours. Soup and Taco is a great hole in the wall restaurant, and my first choice when bringing friends into Fredericksburg for a casual meal.

About a 2 – 2.5: I was pretty excited in checking out The Soup & Taco, a favorite taco place among the locals located in OT Fredericksburg. It seemed as if from all the stores we’ve visited, the staff recommended this place as their top pick for eats. The restaurant is narrow and on the smaller end, and the menu offers appetizers, soups, tacos, various entrees, desserts, and beer/wine. A basket of complimentary tortilla chips and salsa were served — the chips were fresh and tasty, while the salsa had a kick, but a bit more watered down and heavily cilantro-focused. We started off with an order of Pupusas, which came with 3 — 2 pork and cheese, and 1 beans and cheese; the pork and cheese was okay, more cheese than the shredded pork; the beans and cheese, while tasting okay, the filling looked pretty unappetizing(blotted brown). These came with a side of slaw and a watered down sauce. We also tried their Sopa de Tortilla(chicken broth with chile pasilla, corn, chicken, tortilla strips, queso fresco, and a couple of chunks of avocado; I found this to be very watery, and I wasn’t a fan of the queso fresco cheese and the soggy strips of the the tortilla in the soup) and their soup of the day, the creamed corn(this was more on the sweeter end, ever-so-slightly thick with little corn niblets; I preferred this more than the chicken tortilla). For the tacos, we tried the Asado(grilled steak(they have grilled chicken as well); this automatically comes in two flour tortillas with pepper jack cheese in between, topped with jalapeño crema, nappa cabbage, pico de gallo, and cilantro(we opted out of the last 2); the steak had a nice mesquite flavor to them, but I wasn’t a fan of the Americanized tortilla preparation); Chorizo(these came in a corn tortilla, topped with onions; the chorizo was way too salty, and I wasn’t a fan of the taste); and, Carnitas(shredded pork in corn tortillas, topped with fried potatoes, onions, and avocado; the carnitas were way too wet and extremely bland; the fried potatoes(which were more like breakfast potatoes) and the avocado did not really complement the shredded pork). The main issue I had was that the tacos were just too expensive — 2 goes for about $ 7, meaning each one is at $ 3.50; they were all underwhelming in taste; on the other hand, if they were super delicious, I wouldn’t have mind it so much. T___T For drinks, I tried the Hibiscus Lemonade(which tasted like cranberry juice) and the Horchata(extremely watered down). Service was more on the brisk/efficient side. I’m glad I was able to check Soup and Taco out, but will not be back! +overpriced tacos! T____T +grilled beef asado taco +automatic pepper jack cheese in between the flour tortillas for some T____T +watered down Sopa de Tortilla T____T +watered down horchata T____T +no substitutions T____T +2-hour parking along Caroline

One of the best Latin food places I’ve been to. Authentic pupusas, tacos and other dishes. My wife and me plan a stop here as often as possible when traveling. It’s just amazing. And compared to Americanized Mexican restaurant food, much preferred. Even the more authentic places like Mez are generic in comparison. They have a good selection of Jarritos(soft drinks from Mexico). They come in a variety of fruit flavors and are made with real sugar. A friendly, casual atmosphere and good wait staff. Topping off a light lunch with Tres Leches is a pleasure.

This restaurant is so tiny you would miss it if you weren’t specifically looking for it! Located in downtown Fredericksburg, just around the corner from the public parking lot, is this hole in the wall. The door barely closes, there are about eight tables crammed in there and the lighting is horrible. If you’re looking for ambiance, go somewhere else. The girl at the register was not friendly, they looked bored and annoyed that I was even coming in, but even so they were cordial. I got the Pupusas, which are not Mexican, but from El Salvador. It came with two pork and cheese, and one bean and cheese, pickled cabbage and a tomato sauce. I also got sour cream and pico de Gallo with my meal, because I always do. The food was amazing! The tomato sauce was a bit spicy but I could handle it with a little sour cream! The cabbage had the strongest vinegar taste which I love, all in all, the food can’t be beat for pupusas. They only get four stars from me because of the service.

The chipotle chicken was cooked so well! So tender and juicy! Carne asada and fish tacos were also great! Guacamole and their complimentary salsa and chips are perfect starters. Liked their horchata also. It is a small establishment, so there may be a wait in getting a table. Staff were very nice as well.

Everyone’s familiar with the classic soup + salad or soup + sandwich lunch combo, but soup + taco sounds so surreal yet simultaneously so intuitive. Those of us who listened to pop music in the 90s may recall Sophie B. Hawkins’ «As I Lay Me Down» in which the chorus echoes some incoherent chant that many have assumed to be saying«I love tacos!». The fact that this wondrously surreal Mexican café appears in Fredericksburg, VA sounds just as improbable. For my first visit, I went with the namesake combo, choose any one taco and bowl of soup for 7.95(option for two tacos with a CUP of soup for 1 dollar more). The tacos here come in chicken, steak, shrimp, carnitas, chorizo, fish(tilapia), and veggie. The construction of the taco is a bit paradoxical since the filling is like a west coast fish taco with cabbage, lettuce, tomato, diced jalapeño, and a light crema but is enclosed by a double layer of soft tacos with melted monterey jack in between. It’s as if the taco couldn’t decide whether to be light and healthy or rich and decadent. I would have made the crema a bit thicker and drizzled it on top of the taco not only to make it less messy but to also make each bite more consistent and while the cheese in between two flour tortillas sounds reminiscent of a quesadilla, the quality of the tortillas tastes store-bought and would be tastier if either layer were crisped over a griddle or a crunchy taco were substituted for added crunch. The soups are where this place truly shines since they routinely feature black bean and chicken tortilla, whereas I opted for their soup of the day which was a peanut soup with chicken, rice, and yellow peppers. My only prior experience with peanut soup was a sweet Chinese dessert soup, but I found the savory Mexican rendition to be quite lip-smackingly good. The broth had a touch of heat, nuttiness from the peanuts, sweetness from the yellow peppers, and rounded out by the natural umami of the chicken. Add in al dente rice and fresh cilantro, and it was a hearty homemade soup I would order many times over. Wish the taco had a crispier component so that one could dunk the taco into the soup much like a solid grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. Mexican beverages and desserts abound on the menu if one is looking for more and complimentary chips and salsa(strong chipotle pepper component which is good/bad depending on your palate) come with the meal so one does not leave hungry. Solid lunch spot that I would rate 3.5 stars purely on food alone but half star bump for concept and location.

It’s okay. Catered to the American palate but they do offer traditional dishes. I would choose a higher quality of beef. Two tacos for $ 5.95 or $ 3.00 ea. I would expect quality meat. I would come back if Im in the area; however, there are better choices. Buen provecho.
