Pros: Friendly staff, beautiful location, ‘Nature Stuff’ for kids, lovely screened in porches. Cons: *Not* ADA compliant, Expensive, quirky unwelcoming rental policies. Overall, we had a great weekend in this beautiful little park. The kids were able to fish, see wild life, cook out and use the pool and stables over at Pokagon State Park. You do hear quite a bit of highway noise. The cabins are nice, but pricey for what you get. First off, you don’t get a bed. The web site says you do, but it is a pull out sofa. They charge you a lot of money to sleep on a couch. Secondly, you are constantly reminded the replacement cost of every little thing; loss prevention –not hospitality– is job one. The kitchen is supplied with the most basic and cheaply made equipment. You are responsible for cleaning your shower among most other things in the cabin and there’s a charge for ‘extra’ housekeeping. Lastly, and most importantly, do NOT stay here if you need an accessible bathroom. In the so-called Handicapped Accessible cabin, it would be impossible to get a wheelchair through the bathroom door. Then, the layout is so narrow, you’d never be able to reach the toilet. The toilet has NOGRABBARS, is only about 12 inches off the ground and has walls on 3 sides with about 2 inches of clearance. I don’t even think you could get a commode around it. No bench or grab bars in the shower either and it is not barrier free. I couldn’t even get my walker thru the bathroom to the toilet. Need I mention the lack of bed again? The fold out couch was way too low. Yes, the ADA has regulations on all these things and the Trine State Rec Area failed miserably, especially in cabins that were majorly renovated in 2013!(so they are *not* grandfathered) Luckily, my husband was with me and we were able to overcome the surprise of the gross misrepresentation of this cabin. It was very difficult and had we been traveling without the kids we would have left. When we reported our issue to the park staff, they were very unconcerned and their only response was that they’d have their ‘handicap guy; look at it. WHAT??? These cabins have been open a YEAR and no other person has complained? Surely no one in a wheelchair full time has stayed here, they could NOT. USE. THE. BATHROOM! This cabin is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities act and it is a state facility. Inexcuseable! In addition, it is the only one at Trine and it only sleeps 2, Families with mobility issues must rent 2 cabins, at great cost and travel with a 3rd adult. We are very disappointed, to say the least. At least the kids had fun and were ‘unplugged’ for an entire weekend.
