I am terribly dissapointed! I just got 2 pork shoulders thinking to make a new recipe for dinner. I got home, opened the bag and the terrible smell came out of the bag. I don’t think is fare to sell meat when you know is already bad. Be honest! If customers are buying your products and giving you business, you should be honest. Is such a shame to just open your business with a bad start. The location is really good. Pay attention to your customers or else, soon you will be closing, sadly. To other customers that still want to give it a try and see for yourselves, don’t buy any meat or fish, unless is alive. I know for sure that I will never comeback here to make my grocery shoping :-( Good luck Golden Island Supermarket.

This spot on Union Tpke was the site of the Fame Diner for the longest time and was a Jewish kosher market for a short period before Golden Island Chinese Supermarket opened. With minimal renovations they loaded up the shelves with Asian groceries and opened their doors. With ample parking for a couple of dozen cars, they should do well in the neighborhood. In comparison to nearby competitors, it is a little smaller than IOG and Gold City but larger than Chang Xin down the street and offering most of the same items. I even recognize one of the cashiers that moved over from IOG! Fruit bins at the entrance gives you a selection of apples, oranges, berries and bananas as well as more exotic types like mangos, kiwis, dragons, lychees and longan(when in season). Fresh vegetables are next in by the check out registers on the right. With a meat counter and seafood section, fresh cut pork, beef, chicken and fish is readily available. They even have water tanks with live fish like tilapia, sea bass and carp as well as dungeness crab and lobster. Fishballs? I counted at least a dozen varieties. The sauce aisle is quite extensive and the choices of instant noodles is ridiculous. A limited selection of Western type groceries are in their own aisle as well as dairy in the far corner mixed in with the dozens of tofu varieties and brands. Definitely convenient, but will see how crowded it gets(or not) as more people discover its location and if competition with other markets will drive down prices.

Stopped by to check out this new market since it’s conveniently located a few blocks from my home and there is a parking lot with plenty of space. It’s not a very big market, but they do have fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits and other groceries. The place is clean too. Upon entering, I noticed a sign stating that there is 10% OFFALLYOURPURCHASES. Many of the items were overpriced and there’s only a limited variety of stuff, but since there was a discount, I grabbed a bunch of groceries. When I went to pay, I noticed most of the items I bought were excluded from the discount. The sign at the front door was very misleading. If the 10% discount won’t be applied to the entire purchase, they shouldn’t state that its 10% off ALLYOURPURCHASE. Next time I need to buy groceries, I’ll just head over to the Flushing markets where they have a better variety of items at better prices.

This recently opened Chinese market is smaller than most of the big supermarkets with less variety of products. As with most Chinese supermarkets, it’s also a no frills experience. The smell of fresh seafood, produce and meats do not yet permeate the air(but it will). There is little or no customer service(which is fine if you know what you’re buying and the aisle location). Golden Island will get three stars for being conveniently located on Union Turnpike and Utopia Parkway with their own cramped parking lot.

Close with parking is always a good plus. Good assortment of seafood and meats, was a little confused for a moment that the fruits were not in the main area of the store. Small store but has a good variety of products. Clean as of now since its brand new but hard to say if it will stay that way(please do). Nice that it isn’t in Flushing so it makes grocery shopping a lot easier. One HUGE request for the shopping carts, there needs to be buckles for the shopping carts. Thankfully the store wasn’t crowded when I went but I have a active toddler and preschooler and having buckles on the seat would be great. –1 star for that otherwise it wouldve been 4 stars

This is a brand new Chinese grocery store. Before this place opened it used to be s kosher grocery store but that didn’t last too long. Let’s see how long this place lasts. So far so good. The place is nice, clean, bright. Produce appears fresh as does the seafood and meat. Everything is very well organized. I mean this place is brand new so it better be. It’s very similar to the Chang Xin down the street and IOG which is a 5 – 10 minute drive away. It’s larger than Chang Xin and smaller than IOG. There is a parking lot and they are giving 10% off as a grand soft opening special. This may very well be my new go to Asian grocery store because of the three this meets all my needs and its the cleanest. Let’s hope it stays that way. It’s always easier to maintain than to let the place get messy and dirty and then try to clean up.
