while it’s sometimes convenient, i’d put it on the lower end of the libraries in the city. it seems like they took out a fair number of the bookshelves to make room for a larger number of public computers, and these contribute to the «social club» environment others have mentioned.
pretty much all of the seating is overrun every time i’ve been in, which is another part of the «social club» setting; it’s really become a hangout for a fair number of downtown’s homeless, and while the library is kind of stuck in that aspect, it does make this a less than pleasant place to visit when you can smell other patrons 3 rows over.
staff is pretty apathetic as well, as far as i’ve seen.

This place is more like a social gathering. Why is there people talking so loud and the security guard was part of this conversation! Even the staff is loud with their conversation. Why is every one hitting me up for spare change? Twice, before I even set foot in this place.

I love the library and we are frequent fliers to our local branch, so it pains me to complain about this location.
Without sounding like a dick, I still must be honest, this location sucks!!! We happened to be in the area and needed to drop off some borrowed items. When we first walked up to the library, I thought to myself «Oh this is really nice, what a beautiful park like setting» As we got to the doors to enter, we seriously had to dodge piles of vomit and piss. We were both disgusted to see this right at the front doors. How fricken gross!
I’m going to say it’s a good chance the vomit and piss were left behind by one of the many homeless people hanging around the park and doors. One man was clearly insane, mumbling nonsense louder and louder. It was a bit unnerving!
We will likely never return to this location. It just isn’t worth the risk of being mugged and dodging piles of human waste and vomiting!

I’m not going to knock any public library. This said, however, this branch is my least favorite in the Fresno County Public Library system. Too much Formica and linoleum for my taste. Also, because of its location it’s frequented by some of the less salubrious members of the Fresno community.
