This review is in reference to the«Destination Friday’s» event held here every couple of months and not the library itself. If you’re someone who seeks more cultural events and activities in South Florida be sure to add this to your to-do list. This Friday, we were taken to the islands of Antigua and barbuda. We danced to the sweet sounds of calypso, sampled some of the island’s treats like guava cheese, rice pudding(not the sweet one that we are familiar with, but a savory delicacy), salt fish, and pepper pot to name a few. And who can forget the rum. Oh the rum! Entertainment came in the form of carnival dancers dressed in colorful pearl and jewel laden costumes. Such a great night! Locals laughed and mingled and grooved to the rhythms of the tropical oasis that is Antigua and Barbuda… I regret missing last months event featuring Hawaii and look forward to be taken to the Bahamas next month. Yessss! The Library opens up it’s exhibits as well and I was able to check that out. Beautiful works of art from paintings, to drawings, and sculptures all on display for our enjoyment. Be sure to check it out.

Although I was unsure about the area, I must say this library is rather nice. I didn’t have time to walk around and see the what the building had to offer. I was confused at 1st as to where the library was located, but the staff pointed me to the stairs. I walked around the library to find a spot to sit down at and ended up in a study room. The study room was quite spacious and quiet. I actually liked it here and may even return in the future.

I had the opportunity to visit The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center for an Annual Summit meeting on ending violence in our communities. The Research Library which looks more like a museum with notable statues and artwork chronicling the struggle African-Americans have in America. It’s a fairly big building with an atrium leading into numerous rooms which feature space for young and old minds can come together and celebrate the arts. Notably is the theater: which I would estimate to house over 500 seats and a sizable stage. Much like other areas of the library/cultural center, artwork depicting African-American heroes and heritage is proudly displayed. I would suggest this to anyone who is interested in learning a little bit more about the African-American history, especially the young minds in dire need of some guidance and a glimpse of the real world.
