Fullerton Family YMCA

Although I’ve been a member here for only two months, I love LOVE love it! From the outside, it doesn’t look very appealing. However, I was AMAZED when I walked in! The facility is very clean and well-​kept. They also have an indoor swimming pool! The staff is surprisingly wonderful, esp Destiny. She was the very first person I encountered. She’s been helpful and friendly since Day 1.
I’ve taken two classes thus far: Zumba and Total Fit. Zumba is my absolute favorite! Julia is by far one of the best Zumba instructors I’ve ever had. On my first day, she personally introduced herself and welcomed me into the class. She is easy to follow; however, the class is intense. I always get a good workout from her class.
One caveat though: the parking lot gets full at certain times. It’s a bit frustrating for those who are running late (like me, sometimes). BUT! They offer complimentary valet parking so it’s not so bad.
Overall, I’m very pleased with this facility. :)

the reason why I signed up with a family membership is so my kid can use the playground in the kids club. Every time I go (during posted working hours) they say they are understaffed and cannot let the kids play on the equipment outside. What gives YMCA? How about staffing the kids club so my kid can play on the playground equipment? Whats the point of having a playground if you are not properly staffed? I am giving it another month until I decide to pull the plug on my YMCA membership.

Okay, I’ve reviewed you guys before but you deserve two… because I’ve just gotta tell you about Destiny Clyde. she’s another special employee. This little gal is always friendly, always helpful, always positive. I do feel like I’m going home to come here. She explained how to use all the new machines and she is just a pleasure to see. Did I tell you they renovated the whole place? Now it’s nicer than HOME … lol. thank you Destiny for making my visits so fun! Hat’s off to Daniel and Kevin too … Daniel is one of the side-​kicks. also very helpful always happy just a good guy… Kevin, he takes care of the place (just like its his home) BEAUTIFUL !! See that word home a lot? That is because its a great place to come … Thank you YMCA for being a part of my Son Garrett and my life… forever grateful… marybeth

I love the YMCA. Fantastic family friendly gym. Feels more like a community. You get 2 hours of childcare per day when you have a family membership. The classes offered are great, I especially love the spin and pound classes. Alena is great :-)

We always have a good workout at the Y. My 12 yr. old son started working out with me and enjoys it there. We wish the basketball court wasnt always booked. Maybe, they shoud consider an outdoor half-​court when the gym is being used.
It’s definitely nice to go here than the other club chains.

The YMCA is a very good place for all ages! Very clean and it has just about everything!

Clean facility. Basketball court with modern exercise equipment is a winning formula for me. I regret that I couldn’t keep my membership because it was extremely difficult to come out to make the membership dues justifiable.
Maybe after I have some time, I will join again.

This is a great gym. I used to come here all the time about a year ago. The facility is nice and clean and the staff and other gym members are super friendly. If you go every day, you start recognizing the same people who go to the gym. I made two friends while I was here! The gym I now go to, everyone is kind of in their own zones and don’t welcome small talk or conversation (which is fine). I used to get tips from people in terms of how to do weight exercises. One of the trainers there said that I had chicken legs and needed to do more leg/​weight exercises. lol. I still laugh when I think about her comment.
The machines are pretty nice and clean. I don’t remember needing to wait in line for the machines. This place also doesn’t smell (a real big plus). The members are mostly older so you get the senior citizens working out during the day time. I love watching them because they are pretty cute doing their light work out.
The swimming pool gets really dirty and busy during the summer. This is the only negative, which can’t be helped. The space is only so big and I can understand that the pool gets busier when kids are out of school. Overall, this is a very fun and friendly space to work out.

Great YMCA with all the fixens: gym, workout equipment, basketball court, gymnastics, pool, exercise rooms, soccer field, BBQ, kids zone, and recently added batting cages. Nice recent remodel is appealing and Homey.

For kid’s swimming lessons: 2.5 stars.
We did a number of group swim lessons at the Y. The first few rounds of lessons on weekdays went well, and we could definitely see progress. Those instructors were pretty good. Then we switched to weekend lessons and got other instructors that were not so great.
Most recently, their pool heaters were down and they refused to give refunds for when their pool was too cold due to their heaters malfunctioning. The last time we were there, we left the lesson after 5 minutes since the pool was cold and kids were shivering, but they didn’t care — they refused a refund for when their equipment was broken. That’s pretty cheap and inconsiderate considering their equipment was at fault. The instructors also acknowledged it was cold. We didn’t even complete the last round of lessons, and the most recent lessons were below the skill level already achieved.
People at the front desk were nice and helpful. They had a nice holiday breakfast activity with Santa. Facility was clean.
Other customer service definitely needs improvement including the swimming coordinator. A little common sense goes a long way…
We will be going elsewhere.

Clean, Nice Staff & Great Location

Getting more and more crowded. But always clean and for the most part most machines are open. Hard to play basketball because the gym is always in use for something other than basketball.

Kids Summer kick off — Lots of mailers, e-​mails, hype about this event.
This facility is STUNNING and the staff is very youthful and accomadating.
I am a single mom and the facility is «ALL ABOUT FAMILY». The event would be great for kids, but prior to entering, there was a mandatory walk around tour with all the amazing things they had to offer to «famillies.»
Kids Zone, kids classes, swimming, discounts for members and exciting events ALL THE TIME. I was super excited, until I walked through the tour and began listening. The rates were for «partners» and their kids and I felt very alientated. I was told maybe I could speak to someone about «a scholarship», but the issue wasn’t money it was about how a huge chunk of the program was set up.
Adventure guides is for «Dads and daughters» or «Dad’s and sons» and maybe I should come back in a few years when budgeting allows staffing for, or the demand for mom based programs. Maybe I could seek out a «YMCA» in Newport, where they have larger membership.
Maybe.. maybe not.

The staff here is wonderful and the place is always REALLY clean. The equipment is all new and the locker room facilities are great. The weekend hours could be a little longer (closes at 5), but that is my only complaint.
It is very family-​oriented and the early morning tends to have a large percentange of older members.
Overall a great place.

Seems like a great place– haven’t used the facilities yet– just signed up the kids for Adventure guides and a gym membership–

After giving this beautiful facility a year, I decided, it just wasn’t for me.
THE GOOD
The clientele is wonderful.
The front desk staff is always cheerful.
The bathrooms/​locker rooms are very clean.
The pool upgrade is great.
Lots of new treadmills with lots of tech-​y bells and whistles.
THE NOT so good
There were not enough classes scheduled in the early morning (6am or 7am) that I found challenging or inspiring.
I loved my 6am Controlled Burn Fitness and AMP classes and really enjoyed the Wed 7am spin classes taught by Kerry W. but other than that, there were no challenging or inspiring classes scheduled on Tu/​Th mornings.
There were 2 yoga classes I had enjoyed in the late afternoon and evening but sadly, those instructors are no longer there, and another spin/​sculpt instructor left just when I finally had a schedule that would have allowed me to take her classes.
Darn.

I will keep checking the schedule to see if there is an improvement with the group fitness scheduling and just pay the drop-​in fee of $ 12 to take a class vs. paying for a membership.
OVERALL
Still, it’s a beautiful facility with great parking, and friendly people… but sadly, this location does not offer me enough challenging group fitness classes, taught by instructors who are invested in their clients, to keep me coming back.
If you like to just workout on your own and use a treadmill or elliptical, then you may find it to be worth it.
For me, I’d rather go kayaking or go for a trail run and save the money.

We have been here for three kids birthday parties. The facility is very nice with an ideal outdoor space for parties. I have no idea what facility rental costs, but I think it is probably a pretty good deal for members.
The party area is a fairly large patio with a grass area next to the arena soccer field. There is plenty of room on the patio for a party of 50 or so people. The Y supplies a bounce house and cotton candy, sno cone, and popcorn machines as well as staff. The staff were really good with the hoard of four to six year olds at the parties we attended.
Toward the end of the party, the festivities move into the pool house. The pool is pretty nice. All the kids have a great time. Parental enjoyment depends on how much you like to have kids climb all over you in the pool.
No doubt our family will continue to come to parties at this Y when we are invited.

This place is great! We have been family members for several years and will continue to do so. Their sports classes for the kids are great and the coaches do a fantastic job. The facilities are great and if you don’t want a bunch of freaks around you grunting and groaning, this is the place. You can get a quality workout without the insane gym atmosphere.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the shower facilities. Maybe they could change out the shower heads every few months? Those things get so cloged up that the water is all over the place. Other than that, we love «the y.»

This YMCA is amazing. I thought that YMCAs would have dingy buildings and old equipment, but this place looks clean and modern for the most part. The best things about joining the Fullerton YMCA are that there is an indoor heated pool and free childcare!!!
Family membership at this place is a steal for having a heated pool and decent gym equipment!

This Y is fantastic! Granted, it was my first time attending one, but I honestly had a great time that I think 5 stars should be warranted.
They are a full-​gym facility with a pool, which is pretty awesome. They have at least 5 elliptical/​bicycle/​treadmill machines and one of each of the weight machines, along with numerous free-​weights. It’s not very big, but there is ample space between each machine (except for the weight machines, some of them are wedged right next to each other).
Their pool is in a separate building, but it’s very nice. It goes as deep as 10 feet and the water was overflowing, which felt very nice just floating at the very top. They have classes where they train kids to swim, but up until April 2011, they allow other Y participants to swim in the laps when they’re empty. Definitely bring your goggles — the chlorine can be smelt as soon as you open one of the doors (through the locker, or straight to the pool).
Bring your locks as well! No doubt that this is a family center, but you can never be too sure with your personals.
They also have a small soccer field next to the pool, along with outdoor yoga training beyond.
I will have to edit and add on later, but this is pretty fantastic!
Edit 2 — the front entrance is NOT handicapped friendly. I was watching the front door while on the treadmill in the gym inside and this guy in a wheelchair had to maneuver himself around to get the door open, then go through. Nobody helped.):
