Had lunch today and it was excellent!!! All four of us ordered sandwiches, salad and chili. It was fabulous!!! I give it 5 stars and totally recommend this place

Wonderful service from Kristy! She knows her stuff when recommending the sandwiches. There was so much to choice from. It was excellent food! I even got a complimentary glass. I’ll be back!

Mandy at the bar was super nice, unlike the hostess that never even made eye contact. Food was fair but nothing came out together. It made the service, impossible for the waitress. Burgers and sandwiches were good but boneless wings were all breading. Will give the spot another try.

The food here is never the issue, it’s the service. We have enjoyed eating at Macados since our college days(and that’s been a good while now…) and we are glad to have this location here in Galax. The building is the town’s old post office and the décor is great. There’s parking adjacent at the farmer’s market. They can usually accommodate groups pretty easily. The menu has a good variety of sandwiches, salads, wraps, and a few pasta dishes. Good desserts and drink specials. The bar area is nice. But, as other reviewers have said, the service is hit or miss. Do not come if time is a factor in your day. The servers are usually friendly, but the timing of service, refills, etc., is not good most of the time. I’m never sure if it’s a kitchen issue, understaffing, or dividing the waitresses in too many directions. If you are dining with kids, be sure to bring plenty of things for them to do while you wait. You might also want to consider packing a meal for them if they are toddlers or light eaters. The $ 5.95 kids meal is a bit pricey. This is a fun place to come with friends and we’ve had many good times here. Eat here with confidence, but be prepared to wait.

Went to restaurant twice during antique show and food and service was very disappointing. This restaurant was highly recommended and hope no one else gets disappointed like this.

I believe in giving people chances but the last three times I have been to this restaurant it has been horrible. The first time our waitress was sitting on a guys lap on the booth behind us our whole meal. The second time our food was completely wrong and this last time we ordered a salad an appetizer and two sandwiches. Even after the waitress asked if we wanted our appetizer as an appetizer, we got our sandwiches and salad together then literally 2 mins later our appetizer came to the table. No dressing for the salad. Our salad was warm and sandwiches cold by the time we could actually eat. But our appetizer that came after our meal was delicious lol. Our waitress was horrible!!!

Macado’s offers good food at a decent price. I’ve ate many things from there and they are consistent with their quality. However, their service is fairly poor. I’ve found myself waiting 20 minutes for an order of tortilla chips and salsa. When the food does arrive it has always been good. If you’re a fan of hot wings I would recommend trying the Crazy Chris Wrap.

The food is great, however the service at all Macados locations is sub par. The typical wait time for food even when the store is not busy is 30+ minutes. I am not sure what causes this and the lack of attention by wait staff, but it is consistent across all locations. The food is great tho if you have the time to wait for it.

If you want to see a different side to Galax, go to Macados. The crowd is very interesting. The food was pretty good, though the servers were busy because the place gets crowded around dinner time.

I visit Galax about once a year and always make a trip or two to Macado’s. It consistently has good food and a giant glass of beer ready for me. My dad lives in Galax and I make the trip from Nashville to visit him during Christmas each year. I always try something new when making my annual visit to Macado’s. There are a lot of options on the menu and everything is solid. I especially like that you can get a beer in a fishbowl-sized glass. The service seems to always be a bit slow and I was told to never go upstairs because they will forget you’re there. However, if you’re in no hurry and just want to sit back and have a beer and a casual meal, this is a great choice.

Food here is consistently good. Mostly sandwiches but burgers and salads are great. Service is not quite as consistent. If you’re in a hurry, in a large group, on a busy night, expect a wait. The setting and décor are different. The bar is beautiful. Beer selection is decent for Galax.

*****************OPENLATE********************* On a recent trip to Galax, VA. the Mr., son and I arrived around 9pm. We flew in from Los Angeles and drove in from Charlotte so it was a full days travel before we made it into town. By the time we got in we were starving!!! When we checked in to our hotel(check out my Knights Inn review) we learned that just about everything shuts down at 9pm. And this being our first time there we were in awe at how«dead»(in a good way) the town was. So, being that Macados was one of the only restaurant/bars open till 1am we decided to go check it out. The restaurant itself is located in the center of town and when we passed by, on our way to our motel, we would have never known it was still open. Inside you find a lot of vintage toys and memorabilia, very nostalgic and of course down memory lane we went, which was really nice. The service was a bit slow being that the place was not packed at all, at least not for LA standards. Any how, we all ordered sandwiches. I wish I could give this place a better rating, but the food was just OK, really nothing to brag about. It certainly did the job at satiating our hunger and we were certainly grateful, but nonetheless it was just OK. And as previously mentioned the service was ok. It took a while for our server to get to us, then it took another while for our food to be ready and finally it took still yet another while to get out check. So, after getting there about 9:45pm we didn’t get out till about midnight considering the fact that we did not take very long eating our food. I don’t know I suppose we will go back at a different time and see how things turn out then.

Great atmosphere in the old Galax Post Office. Mayberry and local sports memorabilia and good food. Staff is always friendly. 100’s of custom sandwich combinations for you.

Macado’s is great for a few reasons. I love the historical aspect that it is located in the old Galax post office in the heart of downtown. It’s one of the larger restaurants in Galax and has fun décor. And a big plus is it actually has a bar, which there are not many of in Galax. It may not be the most well-stocked bar, but they actually have a nice table/sitting area and it tends to be the go to whenever we are in town for a visit. They do offer a large variety of yummy sandwiches, appetizers and desserts. The service can be hit or miss though. The fact is it can be tough to be a waitress in Galax, and other small towns. Some(not all) patrons tend to only tip a couple dollars regardless of how much the bill is, no matter how great their service is. And since wait staff are paid below minimum wage with the expectation that they’ll earn the rest in tips they can burn out quickly as there is no cash incentive to work harder. But for the most part the service I have received there has been good, bartenders are friendly, and I really do enjoy the food so it keeps me coming back!

Ordinary fare built around the mighty sandwich in a myriad configurations. Sides include chips in a bag. You could make this food at home just fine. Décor is high, wood booths cluttered with pop culture paraphernalia. Average experience all round. Food 4 + ambiance 4 + value 6 + service 5 = overall 4.5 /10(forgettable)

This Macado’s location seems to be a little cleaner than some of the others I have patronized but unfortunatly it has the bad service that the others seem to have. The food is fine, mostly sandwiches, salads, mac and cheese, and lasagna. They also have some pretty good desserts. My only problem with this place is the bad service. Each time I have gone here I have felt like the wait staff viewed me as a bother, like they have better things to do than serve the customers. The service keeps myself and my family from going to the restaurant. It is too bad because it is a pretty neat looking restaurant.

I enjoyed this restaurant. It is mostly sandwiches, although they have quite a variety. The décor is enough by itself to make it worthwhile! It’s interesting and fun and the wait staff are very friendly. I would go there again.

While visiting my folks over in Fries we came over here for lunch one day. Restaurants are few and far between up in this area, so I was surprised to find such a large one in the small town of Galax. We walked in on a weekday afternoon for lunch and it was moderately busy, with most of the staff’s attention being paid to a large group that appeared to be congregating in the front for a meeting/function. We were seated promptly and handed these ridiculously long menus with countless items. After some perusing, though, the great majority were just different variations of sandwiches with catchy names. Our service was prompt and I ordered a «Sherlock Holmes»(mesquite turkey breast, melted cheddar, cole slaw, 1000 island, on wheat bread). The order was a little slow, but our server was helping with the growing group up front, so we were patient as we were catching up with our family. The sandwich was good — nothing groundbreaking — and filling. At this point, our service went from friendly and prompt to non-existent. Our drinks all went unfilled, and after at least 30 minutes of sitting there with dirty plates in front of us, my father had to go up to the front to get someone to give him the check and pay. A bad ending to a moderate experience. My parents swear they’ve have better experiences there, so we’ll see what happens next time we’re in town.
