My husband and I were recently looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of our very busy lives in DC over Labor Day weekend and happened to find this lovely winery and guest house through the VA Wine App: . I called on Monday and was immediately greeted by an awesome southern voice on the other end of the phone. This voice belonged to Mary. Little did I know who I was speaking to… More to follow… We booked the guest house and upon our Friday afternoon arrival we were warmly greeted by Mary Simmons, who is also the Vintner at the winery. She immediately made us feel like a member of the family and not just another house guest. She introduced us to Chris who runs the grounds and day to day maintenance of the operation. We could not have felt more at home but then… We opened the door to the guest house and were blown away by all of the detail and care that was taken in building this lovely get away home. The guest house has a very open feel and provides all of the necessities needed to truly get a way from it all. There is a coffee maker, wine refrigerator, and the bathroom was simply amazing. The bathroom has lovely Italian marble flooring throughout, jacuzzi tub, and walk-in shower. What more do you need? Oh yes we came for wines and the views of course. The vineyard is stunning and is slightly southern facing on a downward slope. This is a perfect place for weddings and honeymoon. The views from all of the gazebos are so peaceful as you look out over the rolling Appalachian mountains. So after freshening up from our six hour drive we went back up to the tasting room which is just behind the cottage. This is where I met the owner Noël Belcher. He is a true southern gentleman who again made us feel right at home. He gave me a tour of the entire facility and allowed me to taste some of their very special chardonnay that will be bottled next week. This was a real treat. My husband and I truly enjoyed absolutely everything about this destination and their amazing boutique wines. We loved it so much we brought back a case. Our personal favorites are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Table for Two, Misty Morning, and their Cellar Door. They also make a refreshing Cranberry Wine that would be great for family gatherings as the months grow colder. They winery recently participated in the 2013 Virginia Governor’s Cup Wine Competition where their Cellar Door and Misty Morning both won silver medals. So if you are looking to get away from it all and truly escape, give Mt. Vale Vineyards a call. I hope that you enjoy your stay as much we did. We are already planning our next trip. In Vino Veritas…
