After reading some reviews decided to give this place a try, The service was good overall, nice to see the wait staff wearing vests and ties, although most of the customers were in shorts. I ordered a german beer that was not very cold. We had the Sauerbraten and the schnitzel, ok but i’ve had better. Not sure i would go back.

was here in March celebrating my husband’s b/day in March and so glad we choose this place(limited choices in downtown Galena)! and it’s just like the name suggests — german and french. it’s set up like a traditional bistro and small and charming. the service was great and we were not rushed(although at the end of the meal we realized we may be late for the magic show!) and our waiter was knowledgable and friendly without being overbearing. i ordered a fish dish(believe a special) and my husband had a traditional streak frites and was a happy bday boy! felt the prices were reasonable especially in the downtown area. while there are plenty of choices along the main street in Galena i’d recommend giving this place a try. especially if you’re looking for something a bit nicer and especially if you’d like to enjoy a bottle of wine and enjoy your meal and take your time.

I love the combination of German and French. Our servers have always been extremely nice and accommodating. The food is delicious, amazingly fresh, and is clearly designed and made with tons of care, pride, and attention to detail. While the prices are high, I’ve always felt like what I had to eat was well worth the cost. The large selection of fine bottled beers from all over Europe is a wonderful touch and every time that I’ve come I’ve tried another. I just hope that they manage to import some Augustiner from Munich some time.

Our favorite place in Galena. Went back again this past Saturday and they never disappoint. Attentive staff that know the menu. Delicious soups, including the onion au gratin and Saturday’s du jour cream of mushroom. Went with the rinsrouladen, just fabulous. When the server asked if I wanted the red cabbage or sauerkraut, I jokingly said yes. His response? «I’ll get both on for you». That’s what I’m talking about. Wife had the pork schnitzel, bigger than the plate and perfectly cooked. Was great the next day for lunch too. Very inexpensive but good wine list. The house wines are really more than drinkable and great value. If in Galena, this is the place to dine.

Very enjoyable dining experience! The waiter took the time to find out what kind of beers we liked and presented us with new ones that we both enjoyed. The onion soup was very flavorful and the bread just right. My husband enjoyed the schnitzel, and I loved the salmon with lingonberries. We shared the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. So glad we choose to dine here! Also glad our car was downhill so we could roll back. Generous portions, we needed a to go box. The wait staff was excellent, they all seemed to be very professional and knowledgable. A bit close quarters in the dining room, but it certainly didn’t detract from the experience.

This may be the best restaurant in the tri-state area. Wonderful service, comfortable atmosphere, fresh and delicious food. Absolutely solid fare. What you’d expect from a French and German place, but exceptionally well prepared.

Have been here several times & always had a good experience. The staff is friendly, the food is quite good & there’s a pretty good wine selection as well. It’s definitely one of the better restaurants in the small town of Galena & a place that I’ll be back to again on one of my trips here.

This is a nice, quaint, more-upscale little place in the midst of numerous eateries in the Galena business district. We just picked it based on what we felt like eating and perusing Unilocal ratings and reviews. You might guess from the name that they offer a unique blend of both French and German classics. We dropped in for lunch and had a couple of sandwiches($ 10 each) — their Schnitzelwich sandwich and their bratwurst on a pretzel roll. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just gotten two of the Schnitzelwich sandwiches for us — yes, boring but better. The breaded pork cutlet was generously sized, thin and crispy, and nicely prepared. The bratwurst was what you might expect, and it did come with a nice German potato salad, but the pretzel bun was a little over salty for my taste. The patrons looked to be more of an older, upscale looking crowd, and are a blend of locals and tourists like us. Service was efficient and friendly.

A must stop-by to eat place in Galena. The restaurant has a very quant and subdue feeling. It’s a little shop that has an extremely nice atmosphere, yet not dressy nor formal at all that makes you feel uncomfortable. We first ordered the escargot, which was extremely buttery and salty. It’s meant to be eaten with bread together to create that perfect balance of soft + crunchy and salty + bland. Next up, my friend got the sausage, pork shoulder, bratwurst, and sauerkraut plate. OMG, this was delicious! The sauerkraut pairs perfectly with all of the sausages and bratwurst. The sour tangy sauerkrauts cuts through the fatty spicy bold flavors of the meats. I would suggest getting this as one of the dish if you like sausages. I ordered the steak and frites for my entrée. But, instead of frites, I got the red cabbage — I know how Germans like their cabbage. The hanger skirt steak has been marinated in their sweet and tangy sauce. Then, grilled to medium rare with a little bite of char on the exterior. The meat just melts in your mouth! Pair it on the side with the sourness from the cabbages… yummy is all you can say. The cabbage has a little bite of sourness which balances out the sweetness from the meat. Tip: Make reservation ahead of time to guarantee seating. Bring your bottle of wine for $ 15.00 corkage.

We were recommended Fritz and Frites while on a little getaway to Galena and they did not disappoint. I would have given them 5 stars however the waitress we had while a very good at her job told us that the cassoulet was a smaller portion and did not recommend for sharing. This was a lie. The Cassoulet is perfect for sharing with a size and dessert. Instead we both got entrees. I got the Steak and Frites which was very good one of the best pieces of meat I’ve ever had and the my husband got the cassoulet and it was also amazing. We wanted to get a dessert they sounded wonderful but we were to stuffed from our entrees. We will be back and and hopefully get to try sides and desserts.

As our last meal in Galena, Fritz and Frites left us disappointed. Here is the breakdown: Service: Great. Our waitress was personable, professional, and checked back on us often. Bread: Delicious, warm, and crusty. Beef Rouladen: The red cabbage was the only good thing on the plate; it had a nice balance of sweetness and vinegar. Otherwise I received a dry, overcooked roll of beef with a pickle stuck inside and a thick brown gravy poured over it. The spaetzle was bland, with not even a trace of salt, and undercooked. It tasted like paste. The presentation was very amateur and looked like something I would serve at home rather than receive in a restaurant. Cassoulet: The duck leg was delicious. Everything else in the cast iron pan had an odd flowery taste to it, like lavender maybe? It wasn’t bad as much as it was strange. Apple Strudel: Delicious and flaky pastry, but very light on actual apples. My boyfriend and I were told this was the best restaurant in Galena, and we left sincerely hoping not.

Our group of 5 thoroughly enjoyed this cozy restaurant with its unique combination of German food and French bistro specialties. Two of us enjoyed the traditional rouladen and the trout special was fresh and tasty as promised by our attentive server. The apple strüdel was authentic and delicious — not overly corn-starched and chewy like many restaurant versions. We were at the back end of the dining hours on a Friday night, so it was just us and another larger party in the space. Seemed it would be a bit noisy when full. We will certainly return.

My spouse and I stopped here for late lunch one Friday afternoon during a weekend at Eagle Ridge. Unilocal reviews sent us here and I’m glad I checked first! What a cute little spot with a funny little menu. After two German beers from a massive inventory available, we ordered the(frites) cheese plate,(fritz) the bratwurst with sauerkraut, a side of red cabbage and the liverwurst sandwich. Everything was tasty, refined and extremely high quality. I must say that this place is NOTKIDFRIENDLY; our six-month old got a few side eye glances from the hostess and servers, despite our very quick lunch. Despite that, loved this little spot. Cheers!

An absolute must enjoy in Galena if you enjoy German food. Nice French wine list as well. My wife is German and a big smile came over face as she first tasted her schnitzel. Roulades better than motherin law used to make. Wasn’t open on Sunday. Very happy we waited until Tuesday morning to try it out. Little pricey but well worth it.

My wife and I stopped in for lunch today, while visiting Galena. My wife ordered the quiche of the day, a Quiche Lorraine. The crust was flaky and buttery and the filling was excellent. The salad that came with it had a very good vinaigrette. I wanted to try the«frites» from the namesake, accompanied by a grilled ham and swiss on a pretzel roll. The latter was pretty much a croque monsieur on a pretzel roll. The mound of «frites» that came with it were authentic, just like the ones I was used to back in the day when I was living in Paris. The frites were accompanied with a homemade aioli, just as they should be. I finished with a good espresso, a nice compliment. We need to return for dinner soon.

Had reservations on a recent Saturday night and were seated immediately. The place has a French bistro vibe and it was very comfortable and inviting. Service was outstanding. Our waiter was attentive without being too pushy and gave us some helpful recommendations. The wife had a nice glass of Riesling and I had a few very good beers throughout the meal. Although there is no beer on tap, they have a couple dozen interesting imports in bottles and cans. We started with a full order of mussels in white wine and garlic which were fantastic. I also ordered a spinach salad with warm bacon dressing which was the best that I’ve ever had(and this from a guy that dines out on German food every other week). For entrees my wife had the nicoise salad with seared tuna and a wonderful dressing. I ordered the beef rouladen which was prepared perfectly with sides of spaetzle and red cabbage. For dessert we split a prune and ice cream dish which was very good. All in all a great night out and we would definitely return when in Galena again.

Ah, I love this place! A bit of Europe in downtown Galena. The atmosphere is homey, cozy and full on French Bistro. If you are looking for light fare, with a bit of class and house wine this is your place. The quality of ingredients and home style technique dictate the menu. You will find German beer and French wine, don’t expect Budweiser or Pepsi cans. This isn’t bar food, it’s classic French inspire/German touched cuisine that could be considered a bit fussy, but is in every way a glimpse of a slow paced meal with a touch of class! I recommend the quiche and salad, house wine, a some time to people watch and enjoy the ambiance.

This place was a shame. We went in and it took a long time before someone even asked us about seating. It wasn’t even busy. I said we had a table of 5 and she said«I can’t do five.» And that was it. I stared at her because I was so appalled and confused by her statement and treatment. I then said«Well … How long will that be?» She said she just seated a TWO person party at a table for 6 so it’s however long they take. There was FOURTWOPEOPLETABLESOPEN, and two four people tables. Why would you sit them there?! NOHOSPITALITY, nothing. No offering to try and put tables together, seemed to have no interest in wanting us there. Very disappointing, very rude. Go somewhere else that will appreciate you better!

Classy white table cloth restaurant with great ambiance. Had a French dinner and a German dessert. What a neat menu! Loved my super fresh, clean tasting tuna nicoise. Everything was perfectly cooked. Son thought his Steak Frites was great! Husbo loved his German braised beef. One in our party had the same thing and said it was the best thing he had ever tasted! Wow! The German chocolate cake was soooo big. A «bail of hay» in comparison to the micro scoop of ice cream that accompanies. The cake was dark, moist and de-lish! The apple strudel with cinnamon ice cream was also a hit. What made the night even more memorable than the neat menu was our server. He was a blond pony tailed«surfer» in speech, mannerisms and looks. Stuck out like a sore thumb in this sophisticated environment, but he was super friendly, calm and patient with our large group, which we appreciated as we were a little on the loud side. He did seem new to serving though as he didn’t clear any of our dishes until we started stacking them on the end of the table.
