I think the all-in cost for this service is probably about comparable to what you’d pay in a local market for top of the line seafood, and the freshness and quality can’t be beat! It’s also nice having the peace of mind that your seafood is being sourced responsibly and coming from the pristine waters of Alaska. The folks at Sitka keep you well informed about the catch via email and even send info/recipes with each shipment… It’s definitely like being part of a little community. We’re only 2 months in to the 7 month commitment we signed up for and I can already tell we’ll be signing up again next year! FYI, the black cod(which we just received this month) was out of this world… So buttery and tender! I actually just called up Sitka and had then add an additional 5 pounds of it to our upcoming July delivery, which I believe is king salmon. Also, everything comes neatly portioned, vacuum sealed(blast frozen), in a convent little box for your freezer. Living in the Midwest, it’s likely that any fish you get out at a market or restaurant has arrived frozen(even at Dirk’s, Whole Foods, or your favorite sushi spot), but at least this way it hasn’t been thawed out and sitting around for awhile somewhere before you consume it. Just because you never saw it frozen doesn’t mean it wasn’t. So short of moving closer to a coast or catching the fish yourself, this is probably your best bet for getting the freshest seafood possible to your table…

So worth the cost. The fish is delicious – fresher than any other I’ve tasted and the customer service is lovely. Everyone at the company is so passionate about the fish and will happily answer any and all questions. Delivery is very convenient – if you live in one of their delivery zones, they personally deliver to your door on dry ice. Everyone I’ve ever served it to has been blown away. Sitka has ruined restaurant and store-bought fish for me as it tastes so much better, but it’s worth it.

Many of us have heard of community agricultural shares. Sitka Salmon Shares gives you the same concept, except it’s a chance to tap into super fresh seafood over the course of the season. SSS works with small family producers to procure the freshest and best handled WILD king, coho, and sockeye salmon; as well as cod, halibut, spot-prawns, and black cod. No farmed product here. We just finished our second season with them and have been very happy with every shipment. The first season we split our share with some friends. The second year we wanted it all for ourselves. :-)
