I have been attending the Iron Dragon Dojo for a couple of years using the Cane Masters system taught by Stan Toscano. The Dojo is a fully outfitted gym and martial arts training area. It is always a clean, inviting, safe and pleasant environment. I began training after a motorcycle accident and the resulting injuries resulted in my needing a cane for assistance. I have since fully recovered and continue training for the improved physical fitness & coordination it provides. Stan adapts the training to individual needs focusing on exercises that translate directly to practical self defence techniques.

I have been training with Stan a little over a year. I came to him with a painful nerve condition that left me disabled and in constant pain. I am now regaining some of the balance and mobility I had lost. I have seen many of his students also improve. I take a class called Cane-Foo which teaches you self-defense and how to exercise using a simple cane. Stan is a patient teacher, giving you one-on-one attention in a class setting. The class is fun and keeps you in engaged. Stan mixes it up each time, keeping the training from ever become boring.

I’ve been training her for almost a year. You will not only learn the physical martial arts but also the mental martial arts. Although the punching and kicking are fun, it’s the mental martial arts: respect, self discipline, integrity, self confidence and perseverance are just some of the skills you will learn. Master Stan Toscano is a very experienced martial artist and above all he has the patience of a saint. I highly recommend anyone interested in not just martial arts but also the physical and mental training that you contact Iron Dragon in Galt. I always look forward each week to see what else I can learn.

I visited this school about a year ago to inquire about classes. The head instructor was very polite and professional, and took the time to discuss the school’s curriculum. The instructor has years of martial arts experience, and is a retired law enforcement officer. As far as I was told, the sparring is minimal, with a little bit of one and two-step light contact sparring. Unfortunately, this does not provide students with the necessary tools to defend themselves in a violent street situation. There is not much of a grappling component to what they teach at this school either, just mainly kenpo, which is a great self defense art IF taught properly. The only way a student is going to develop the reactive skill sets successfully is to train with as many resisting opponents as possible, and do it consistently each week under close monitoring to avoid major injuries. Non-compliance training is really a complete waste of time, and it gives a student a huge false sense of confidence. Resistance training is the most efficient realistic type of training. This is why kickboxers, boxers, Muay Thai boxers, jujitsu and judo practitioners can use what they are taught at a very high percentage of the time. Sadly, the vast majority of traditional martial arts dojos are horribly lacking in what is needed to stay alive on the streets. Give a student what they NEED, not what they want. And minimize the amount of forms a student must learn. It’s just a massive waste of time and has very little to do with actual self defense. I think that what this school offers is good, but isn’t the place that I felt I could learn the needed skills I’m looking for. Also, the instructor looks to be in good physical shape, however, how many more years is he going to realistically be able to teach? Who will be qualified enough to take over the school?

No karate school can compare to the training you receive at the Iron Dragon Tactical School of Self Defense. It teaches you a realistic approach in self defense. It is a traditional Kenpo karate system. This school also teaches the Cane Masters program. We develop the mind and body by promoting essential motor skills. some skills are strengthening coordination, balance, strength, and flexibility through the martial arts movements. Also, by teaching discipline, respect, self esteem, confidence, and focusing through positive social interaction. Weapons of variety will be introduced in later phases of training for practical and traditional training. You can train up to 6 days a week, twice in one day on Monday’s and Thursday’s, at no additional charge. We have family discounts, and our student age groups are from 4 years old to ??? Come in and check us out, you will see why so many people have chosen the Iron Dragon Tactical School of Self Defense for their martial arts training. This school also helps law enforcement employees and/or cadets with firearms, weapons, handcuffing, etc. You can visit us at

I used to train with stan back in high school, he’s a great self defense instructor and his classes can also be a fantastic workout for those wanting to get in shape. I haven’t been to his dojo in downtown Galt, but he used to have classes in his backyard(or garage on rainy days) which was quite the experience. I remember one day, trying to do a form while he distracted our eyes with a water hose… haha. He didn’t do that often but he was always trying to find new ways to mix things up for us. I really appreciated how different it was compared to the usual karate place, where you can see yourself doing forms in the mirrored walls, he emphasized body control– knowing where your foot is(without looking) so that you don’t screw up the technique for example. I don’t know how his classes are currently, but I think he provided great real world tactical self defense back then and have no doubts that he’s still a great teacher. I wish I had stuck with it longer than I did.
