Do not go here. Glinda the owner comes across sweet but don’t touch or alter anything in the bar like fans, lights or chairs because she will get irate. Beer prices are higher than anyone in the area. Nothing like it is advertised. With as rude as she is, it’s no wonder she is losing her business.

Such a fun neighborhood bar! Glynda, the owner, is the sweetest and shared her vast knowledge of hidden gems in Galveston with us new Galvestonians for 2 hours straight. We will definitely be back to continue our conversation and maybe even get some more recipe advice! Note– they only accept cash so come prepared :)

Ok so I heard this bar had a Wizard of OZ theme to it. I was disappointed when we stopped in and there was no wizard of oz influence to be found. What I did find was a group of regulars who welcomed us in and treated us like we were one of them, Just a basic bar with a very limited selection of beer and liquor. They had a killed CD jukebox though. The owner was super nice and I could see hanging there if I lived close by.

Anyone who knows me knows that The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie. Ever. I can sing/recite the flick, word for word. And I’ll attend any movie screening — from River Oaks Theatre to the Houston Symphony. So you can imagine my excitement when I realized this bar is themed around this 1939 classic. How so? Well, for starter, their pint glasses have character designs from the movie — from the Cowardly Lion to Scarecrow to Dorothy. And secondly, the owner’s name is Glinda! That’s pretty much where the theme ends. No yellow brick road; no Munchkins statues on the patio; no Wizard; an no real life Toto. But the bar name, pint glasses and owner were enough for me to be giddy over this bar. As far as the atmo goes, it’s a dive. Like a true Galveston dive. The outside looks über sketchy. I’d never — in a million years — think this was a still-operating bar. Even with the sign outside and the one Unilocal review I saw by Hal R. But walk inside and you’ll find a blasting A/C, juke box, pool table, tables, chairs, lengthy bar, and two sassy sisters working behind the bar. Word has it that before Ike, the bar was a bit more adorned. They had«beautiful» ornate cushion bar chairs but were irripairable after the flooding and mold. The drinks are stiff, but pricey as far as Galveston and dive bar standards. But again, that drink will kick ya in the face if you don’t watch it. As for the two sassy sisters mentioned, these ladies are *absolute* characters. if you’re ever in Gally and enjoy a real dive, The Wizzard is a great start(or end) to your bar-hopping escapades.

A bar as close to Cheers as Galveston offers. Always good tunes on the juke box. Glynda behind the bar knows how to pour a drink. And her name is Glynda. And the name of the bar is the Wizzard. You do the math.
