I’m glad this place has good reviews, because wow. I pass this place by on my commute every day, but never had any of their food until tonight when my mom came by to visit me and brought dinner in the form of Chu Ga Jip take-out. She brought an order of don-katsu(deep fried pork cutlet) and an order of fish-katsu for us to try together, because she’d heard good things about the don-katsus here. First of all, the orders turned out to be HUGE. Not only do you get kimchi and kkakdugi(both are very high quality, way better than the typical restaurant fare, at the perfect stage of fermentation), you also get cabbage salad and an interesting verision of macaroni salad that has peas and carrots in it for a surprisingly good side dish, and rice, AND3 good sized strips of don-katsu(and fish-katsu) — all this, for less than $ 10! Most donkatsu places, you get one strip of don-katsu and that’s pretty much it, but this was a huge serving. I couldn’t even finish half of mine, not with trying all the side dishes at the same time. You definitely get enough to 2, maybe even 3 meals. Secondly, the don-katsu and fish-katsu were delicious. Very well made, compared to some places I’ve been. They were a good thickness, not pounded so thin that all you get is crunch; the breading was also light but thorough, not too thick as to overwhelm the taste of the meat. And, most importantly, none of it was greasy at all — just a light crunch and deliciousness in your mouth.

I can’t speak a lick of Korean but was able to order by pointing at the pics from Unilocal. The couple are really accommodating though when they realize I’m not Korean. This place is the very definition of hole in the wall, with the accompanying hearty deliciousness. Usually I don’t post reviews on Unilocal because I’m a selfish bastard and want to keep hidden gems to myself but I’m running out of pics to point to so please help me!

I decided to give it a try after reading the reviews. Ordered sullongtong(beef bone soup) to-go. The soup was great and fulfilling for my brunch, and the kimchi was very flavorful — one of the best I’ve had so far. The only issue I have was that it’s not good to order such fresh hot soup to-go because the Styrofoam container and plastic lid had changed shape due to the heat by the time I got home. I immediately poured it out in a bowl, but still wondered how much harmful chemicals had been released into the soup. I’ll go back to try other menu items but will either dine in or bring my own stainless steel container — it’s more environmental friendly anyways.

Chu-ga Jib«My wife’s side» Simple, friendly, affordable, and perhaps the best Korean comfort food in GG. Located on a side street off of Garden Grove Blvd on Galway. I am kind of sensitive to chemicals used in food preparation. Delicious, simple and yet clean; this place does not use chemicals like a lot of the other places. They prepare food like the way they would at home to feed friends and family. The décor is reminiscent of the 80’s in Korea. But food and service is truly great!

The couple that run this place are so nice! They try to feed my son each time, but he won’t have it. :) Their sulungtang is yummy and piping hot and they give a lot of meat and side dishes as well. Unfortunately it is loaded with MSG so I can’t partake as often as I would like. The prices are really fair for the portion sizes and I love supporting small businesses like this.

They don’t have a big selection but they have everything you’re looking for in a place like this. If you’re hung over and need some suhl-lung tang(beef bone marrow soup) or you’re just in for a quick bite this is the place. Their food is better than most places in GG, unless you’re looking for meat.

This place deserves more reviews, but their clientele base is more of the Korean speaking older generation who do not use such things as Unilocal.I vaguely remember going to this place about 20 years ago but today I regretted not going back until now. Their sulungtang has to be the best in GG and the kimchee and kkaktugi– oh man, fabulous! Just the perfect level of fermentation to taste recently made but not too recent because the favors have settled into the cabbage and radish, not floating around separately. Broth had the right amount of depth and flavor I was looking for. Serving was enough to feed two people. I got the order to go and the owner handed me the change which should have been .45 but gave me .50 instead. I told him that he overpaid me and he said he didn’t have the correct coins. The food was already cheap and I felt bad so I tried to hand him back the 2 quarters saying, «oh no, you should just take it back» and he refused. I can tell that he is an honest man and is not money driven. A man like this(and his wife) will feed you a good meal with fresh ingredients and will not take short cuts to save an extra buck or two. I guarantee it. This restaurant just became my go to sulungtang place in GG, one I’ve been searching for in the last 18 months!

From LA to SD — I’ve tried the best of em but this place definitely needs some attention. A hole in the wall atmosphere with the best kimchee, sides, and suh lung tang you can ask for.

I went here a few times and the old couple owners are always very nice and they give you fried egg and sample of miso & rice. Soup is typical sollantung like all other soup places. Even my 4 yr old will get a small bowl of soup, rice, complimentry and even gives him a fried egg also. Price is reasonable too. For soup $ 6.99. I’m gonna try their don katsu pork next time

I eat my lunch here. This is not a Unilocaly place unfortunately. It is a «Korean» lunch place where old Koreans come to eat a meal to survive another day. I am becoming that old Korean man, tired and defeated. So I come here to have a meal to survive another day. Food has to be good. It has to be lacking all pretentiousness. Just honest bowl of soup and enough rice to keep a man going for another day. That’s what this place does. They have a $ 2.99 plate of spicy bean sprout soup. Dirt poor man’s meal. Probably has 20 cents worth of ingredient. I in fact love spicy bean sprout soup. That is one of my favorite dish with little bit of kimchee in it. That dish helped me overcome many of colds. It was that warmth and heat in the darkest and miserable times of my life. It literally is a bowl of soup with bean sprouts and pepper. Few anchovy is used to flavor the water. But the heat from the pepper helps fighting cold and with little bit of kimchee in it clears my stomachaches. Thank goodness I don’t get sick often. It is cheap, simple and just brutally honest bowl of meal. I can’t order that. I am too well off for that meal. It probably was made for some dirtbag far far poorer than I. I can’t honestly steal another person’s meal. I tried though. I had to leave enough money on the table but I had to have that bowl. And it was good. It wasn’t a $ 2.99 bowl of soup. There used to be time when a eatery provided sustenance. It had to feed the rich, middle class and even the poor. There are all kinds of travelers on the road called life. We live in a society that only respect money now. But here is a place with $ 2.99 dish and it will serve it not as a pauper’s meal but give you a full and complete meal. Even for a poor man, a hearty meal will be provided. So I eat here. I don’t order my favorite. But maybe if I eat here and pay regular price that man that orders that $ 2.99 plate will eat another meal. That’s what an eating establishment should be doing. So go away. This wasn’t a review for you. Go gorge yourself a fat steak or AYCEKBBQ. This place isn’t for you. For every meal, they give you fried egg. A bit of protein that you maybe missing whole day. They give you spoonful of rice with carefully prepared miso. A spoonful of luxury that tempts you to live. They will give you soup that is loaded with meat flavor and they won’t charge for extra bowl of rice because you are hungry. Shame on you.

Mom and pop shop with delicious Korean food. I recommend the don Kat su and soybean noodles!

I really wish I knew how to speak and read Korean. I would be able to talk to the cute couple who own this place. I absolutely love mom and pop shops, this is how my family makes a living. So, when it comes to trying out a new place, I naturally gravitate to a place like this. I have only came here with my Korean friends and they order for me. I have always gotten this one soup, that came with clear noodles. I have dined here as well as ordering to go. The quality is and always has been great. Also, they give you just as much, if not more food and side dishes, when you order to go. What I love the most about this place is their Kimchi. The Noona there makes it fresh. She even grounds her own chili by hand. I have seen a few video’s online on how to make Kimchi, all in which use chili«powder.» As stated earlier, nope, not here. Noona grounds her chili in house from fresh chilies herself. There have been at least 10 occasions where I come in just for the Kimchi. I love this place. It is EXTREMELY affordable and superior quality.

Come for the soups. It’s what they specialize in. The Sol Lung Tang is tasty and great for a cold night. The side dishes are limited to 2 kinds of kimchee(cabbage and radish), a fried egg, a bean paste sauce and one other kind of rotating ban chan. The owners are 2 old, nice people who are hard core Korean. The menu is all Korean and so is the clientele. I tried to check in on the Unilocal app, but for some reason it did not come up on the check in list of nearby restaurants, even though I was sitting in the dining room.

I really want to give this place a better rating. The owner is so nice and concerned about your dinning experience. The limited menu will make it difficult for foodies. Especially, for those who are not as adventurous as other. The best thing to order is the So-lung Tang. The soup is so delicious and hearty. I recommend ordering the soup with beef. The other options are too crazy for most people. Because it consists of tendons and intestines. The Bahn Chan is really delicious. They start you off with some fried egg on rice. And the best kimchi around and other side dishes. Bahn chan is a must have when you go to any Korean restaurant. That’s why this place is a good spot to check out. Another really good thing to order here is the Japanese Style Katsu. Its called the Don-Katsu at Korean restaurants. The deep fried pork covered with panko breadcrumbs. Is cooked very well, and the portion is huge. The reason I like the Don-katsu here is because most places charge a lot for this dish. And it doesn’t taste good because the meat is too thin or not cooked correctly. The value of the dish here is excellent. Service = A– Cleanliness = B+
