My sister and I went tonight and the lady working there was very nice. The drinks are super cheap $ 2.85 for a smoothie. My sister got a cookies n cream and I got a mango smoothie. The mango smoothie wasn’t the greatest but can’t complain with the price.

donuts are pretty good. we come here like once a week. When it’s a slow morning at work, we come during our break to a dozen donuts. I haven’t had a problem and good service. I can’t wait for colder weather so i can try the tamales taht everyones talking about from this place.

This place has some of the best tamales I’ve ever eaten! Moist masa and large amount of flavorful chicken! 2 $ for giant tamale can’t beat it!

Green Tamales is a must, the red Tamales are good as well, but I prefer the green one. You need to get here either in the morning or early lunch, because they do sell out. Not sure on how man batches they make but it’s worth the $ 2 that you spend on a single tamale.

Their glazed donuts are the best! It’s fluffy on the inside and has a slight crunchiness to it.

Tried the rest so why not try no.1 had the Chicken Green n Chicken Red Guatemalan with the leaf not husk. And to my surprise both were TASTY a bit heavy handed with the salt for my taste but flavorful. So if you wanna try some Tamales anywhere try to get them the day they were made and they will not be dry. I HOPE!!! LOL

So I came In last week after a long night of partying with a few buddy’s. After a long night of drinking and getting wasted what better way to end the party then with doughnuts, right?! So we ordered a dozen. After ordering the last doughnut we noticed 2 roaches crawling along, inside of the glass and along the pans. I didn’t notice until after we had paid. After requesting for our money back, and for them to take the doughnuts back, they stated that the doughnuts were still good. We tossed the dozen Into the trash and headed over to Lees Sandwiches on brookhurst. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place.

I love this hole in a wall donut place! You would never really expect to find out a donut shop that sells tamales. BUUUTTT, these aren’t your typical tamales that you would expect. These tamales are actually wrapped in banana leaves which makes the texture of the mass extremely moist and really tasty. It’s so cheap and a very good size. It’s $ 2 per tamale and it’s a great price! You’re lucky if you get new fresh ones!

I love the tamales here. They are soooo good. The masa is a bit different from the regular tamale it’s more moist. Kind of reminds you of the vietnamese banh with meat inside. Also cool they use the rice cooker to keep the tamales warm. They have green, red, and chili. There green tamale is very good but also very spicy so I tend to prefer eating the red one with some sriracha on it. Not a fan of the chili it barely has enough chili in it for me to taste anything. Donuts here are okay the ones I like the most is the bear claw which has apple filling inside and the boston cream with custard inside. The ham and cheese croissant is okay. This place is more expensive than the regular donut place but hey it’s got tamales who can complain. Warning: tamales might run out before a certain time so come in the morning.

So I have been looking for a tamales place for the longest. By accident I found this place through Unilocal and it had me really skeptical because I have been here for their donuts before and it was average at best. However, upon reading my fellow Unilocaler’s reviews, I quickly realized that the owner makes a special batch of tamales each day and sells them. Whatever they decide to make that day and however many is all that is available. I came the first night after a Unilocal elite event(still hungry) and was looking to order some tamales. The owner informed me that they were out and that I came too late(I think it was 10ish). Not wanting to be defeated, I came back the very next day a bit earlier and was able to pick up their green spicy chicken tamale. Upon first bite it was absolutely stunning. I didn’t even need any hot sauce to enhance the flavors because it was already so flavorful. The spices were incredible and I was left fiending for more. So I came back again the day after and wanted to order the same thing but they were fresh out. I ordered a red chicken tamale instead. It wasn’t as flavorful and it was less spicy than its predecessor. Finally verdict, come early as possible and get the green spicy chicken tamale. They run out very quickly and are already scarce as it is. PS The store is open 24⁄7 PPS donuts are just average which is weird since its a donut shop yet the best thing here is the tamales

Loved the green tamale! Its cuban style so they’re smoother, a little more gelatenous and a tad bit sweeter. Its a great place to just stop in for a quick bite and any time of the day. The staff is very nice and accommodating as well.

This place was open late at night. Didn’t feel like driving all the way to the beach for seaside so I went here. Good ham and cheese croissants and they even have cheese danishes. Very good experience

My usual MO for evening visits to SAK is to acquire their tamales! I enjoy these so much more than the traditional tamale typically encountered. These are wrapped and steamed in banana leaves, not corn husks. The masa is not dry and starchy, but dense and moist. I always liken it to the texture of a Vietnamese Hue region dish called banh nam, which is also wrapped and steamed in banana leaves. My favorite is the pollo verde because it’s spicy! As the other reviews mention, the masa to protein ratio is appropriate here. At home, I usually reheat them first and then add more habanero sauce for more kick. My boyfriend tried the jalapeño and cheese tamale last time, which resembled more of the traditional tamale. It wasn’t great, but the jalapeños they chose were hot, hot, hot. Maybe it’s my timing, but the donuts aren’t always the freshest. I’ve only stopped by in the evenings, and I’ve found the my choices are sometimes a tad stale but not inedible. It can be overlooked because the store owner is always super friendly. On my last visit, she discounted my fritter because it had broken in two pieces, which I didn’t even mind. It will taste the same in one, two or ten pieces! When I got home, I realized she even stuck a free crueler in my bag! The donut gods were speaking to me that night.

Read an article today… These are Central American(Salvadorian, Guatemalan, etc.) style tamales. Duh. You learn new things everyday.

I read about this donut shop in an OC magazine yesterday. It was listed as one if the best places in OC for tamales. Tamales in a donut shop? Well, I would have never thought you’d find donuts and tamales in the same place, but okay. It sounded interesting. I will try the next time I am in GG. Well, life brought me to GG this morning. I finished my business and headed over. I ordered three specialty donuts and four tamales. When I saw the size of the tamales, I quickly adjusted my order to two tamales. They are HUGE! When I got them, they were each wrapped in foil and then put in a white bag and labeled by type. When I got them home and peeled off the foil, I found a sheet if wax paper surrounding a green banana leaf. Definitely not used to that as the tamales I am used to eating are wrapped in corn husks. I chose to have the red chile chicken tamal and leave the chili and cheese for my hubby. There was lots of masa but there was lots if meat, too. The masa was smooth, not grainy or crumbly or dry. The meat was spicy and delicious. Well worth $ 2. The tamal I had was good but I will not be ordering from this place for holiday parties cuz I don’t think my family will get past the banana leaves. Coffee and donuts were average and the shop itself was not dirty, but looked messy and cluttered.

I haven’t been here in so long! I use to come here with my dad and sister and it would be a treat for us to get donuts for breakfast back in elementary school. I was at SchoolsFirst with my sister and decided that I wanted a donut. Walked over and was greeted right away. What we got: Maple Bar & Chocolate Sprinkle Donuts: maple bar was just your average maple bar. I don’t think it’s as sweet compared to other places? But I still loved it! As for the chocolate sprinkle donut… my sister enjoyed, but nothing to great about it. Service: There’s not much to it. Walk in, point at your donut, pay and get out of there!

I walk in. I scan the place and look puzzled. The woman behind the counter asks to help me. I lean in and whisper, «do you have… tamales?» The cops did not bust into this speak easy. Thanks to my Unilocal fam, I’m so glad to have found this random gem. There is no advertising on the window or even the menu posted that they have tamales. There are 2 photocopied signs with the $ 2/tamale that I noticed on the side wall while I was paying. Damn, I thought it was very In-N-Out of us all to be this sneaky. :) I got the spicy chicken tamales. Absolutely delicious. Moist with tons of chicken, green chile and a slight heat that sings on the tongue. For those who keep dissing the texture, hellllo?! These aren’t Mexican style tamales, they’re more Guatemalan style! Major differences: they are cooked a banana leaf & the masa is smooth and slightly rubbery(in a good dense way, not in a non-edible way).
