If you have vintage HiFi and Stereo gear and have searched for a good repairer in Los Angeles then you have run into the same problem I had. There aren’t any ~ well any that I would use. They are either to expensive, to basic or too slow. If you are like me then you don’t want someone fishing around with a multimeter right? You want your gear bench tested. Yep. My Harman Kardon 430 was down and out for over a month. After one unsuccessful trip to one repairer(no charge or damage) I became a little despondent. This is L.A. I thought. The heart of music, entertainment and all things Vintage. I had read forums and many tales of woe by others in a similar situation… but I didn’t give up, this is L.A. I kept telling myself, all things are possible here right? And I have the receiver that Jeff Buckley played his first demo on, it had to be fixed! I did come across a website that talked mainly about repairing Jukeboxes. My curiosity was piqued so I sent them an email and I got a prompt reply. Yes we can take a look at your receiver. After a bit of a Jig and a few emails back and forth I knew then that I had found vintage gear repair nirvana! High five me someone, please… Once I had made an appointment I loaded up my 430 and off we went to Torrance. Not a bad trip down Fairfax, La Cienega and onto the freeway. RJB Electronics is tucked away in a semi industrial. Nearby is Old Town Torrance where there is a Micro brewery and a fabulous Bakery so make a day of it. Stepping into RJB Electronics is like stepping into a time capsule. Vintage gear tagged for parts, shelfs with tubes in their original boxes. I knew I was in the right place. Ross is a gentleman and a real pleasure to deal with. He’s been repairing gear since he was knee high to a grass hopper so he knows his stuff. So the repair was successful. They found a fault that I would have never found — a few cracks in a hard to reach circuit board! They even fixed my speaker terminals for me. The good news is that the repair didn’t break the bank either. Sigh of relief. I walked away happy as Larry and am now enjoying my this wonderful receiver again. Notes: It’s a bit of a drive but worth it, make a day, morning or afternoon of it by visiting the Old Town. RJB Electronic Services is by appointment only. I was told that the average turn around is one month depending(complexity, parts availability, workload). You are dealing with enthusiasts and craftsmen so you can relax. Phew. They also have some nice gear for sale which has been fully restored.
