We did a beer tasting here and I loved it. It’s a small, no frills, independent brewery. The brewmaster dude was pretty awesome and hung out with us for a good bit. He even took us around to see the place. The beers were all for the most part excellent. I went home with a six pack of the hefeweizen. The Porkslap is good too.

this is the most out of the way place to visit on the cooperstown beverage trail, but it’s definitely worth a visit because in my opinion they serve the best booze on the whole trail. i love their snapperhead IPA, and their other beers are good too and i like the cool graphics they have on their cans. it’s located on a farm that has some really nice scenery in the autumn months. a couple times we called ahead when we were running late on a tour and they agreed to stay open a little while longer so we could visit, which was really cool, but another time one of the women workin here made a joke about how i looked like a certain celebrity. everyone had a good laugh. everyone but me… still, i enjoy this place.

This place is more distribution based than it is set up as a retail space. The bar is this odd open front that’s got a low ceiling, cracked walls, and a sad washed up bar tenderess. Do bartenders often drink with their clientele? Is that thing? It’s 4.30 on as Friday, and they close at 5PM, is that about right? She wouldn’t stop talking about how she lived in New York City once, and it apparently broke all her hopes and dreams. We;re not therapists, please just tell us about the beer. The brews were uninspiring, and the ones from the tap has a sickly flow. Weak pour from the taps make me wonder if there’s a lead somewhere allowing bacteria to seep in and grow. This was my least favorite stop on the Coopertown Brew Tour.

I tried to check in here, but cell service can be really spotty. Our GPS didn’t work on some of the back roads, so if you are planning to come here from far away, bring a map as a back up. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable about the beers, but could not give us a tour because the brewery was too busy. The Brewery is small, so a tour guide wasn’t really needed to explore. The price has changed, it’s now $ 5 for 7 samples or 2 samples for free. You can sit outside, enjoy your samples because they have picnic tables outside or you can enjoy them indoors with their small sitting area. They have a map, which leads you to other wineries and breweries, so a fun day can be made out of this place.

As others have said — the tasting fee is so cheap. The beer is really great and it was a treat to try so many that do not get distributed to CT. The find of the day is their Heineweiss which I’m hoping to find somewhere soon. All 6 beers are really tasty. The atmosphere at Butternuts is fantastic. You can’t beat a brewery in a barn with some outdoor seating. Inside is truly like standing in someones barn /garage. You can see the canning operation and the beer storage. The tasting experience was fantastic thanks to our hostess. I feel terrible for not knowing her name but she is a real pro and lots of fun. We were also lucky to be tasting with at least 4 other groups of awesome people so it was like hanging out in a private bar for an hour. All in all it was really awesome and I’ll be recommending this one for years to come.

I wish you do ½ stars cause I’d absolutely give it 4.5. The only reason I feel as if I cannot give it 5 stars is because it is very small and I wasn’t able to go on a tour so I’m not sure if the tours are worthwhile. 1. Tastings: They cost 2 dollars for 6 tastes or a few for no charge. There was a woman named Betsy who was pouring our drinks and she really made the experience. She was extremely knowledgable about not only Butternuts beer but beer in general. Having someone KNOW beer during a tasting really helps you out as they can recommend what to drink it with, and recommend which of their beers matches closely to your favorites. 2. Décor. This place is small but amazing. I’d say it’s like drinking in a bar… but it is drinking in a barn. It’s got a great we just brewed this in our back yard feel. 3. The beer: Delicious. These beers aren’t crazy or cutting edge except for the fact that A. They are in cans and B. They aren’t going too far out of the box, they are a few of the only beers that stick to the original standards of the types of beer they are. They are all delicious and we couldn’t help but buy a 12 pack on the way out. Notes: Bring a growler because they have things you can’t get in stores there, there are 3TAPS that have delicious special brews. If you don’t have a growler you can buy one there as well.
