My sister spent the last 2 weeks of her life at Wingate at Haverhill receiving hospice care from Merrimack Valley Hospice. Even in this brief period of time, the staff made an impact on my sister and my family. They worked extremely hard and seemed to always find ways to take special care of us. My sister had been in another nursing home in a shared room for the past 6 months. When she transferred to Wingate at Haverhill, they placed e her in a private room. No one knew then whether my sister would live days, weeks or more… and it meant a lot for us to be able to have privacy during our visits. The staff heard us discussing that family was coming from out of state to visit my sister. After they arrived, the nurses had a tray of sandwiches and coffee brought to our room. And then muffins the next morning. They never asked us if we wanted them. They simply took care of us so that we could focus on my sister. As a large group of us gathered around her bed, one of the nursing assistants came in to give her some soup. Even though she was very weak, she joked with him in a way that demonstrated they clearly had formed a bond during her stay. When a loved one needs full time nursing care and becomes unable to communicate, you can’t help but worry about whether they are being treated well in your absence. Seeing the care this aide showed her with his simple banter as he helped her take a few sips of her last meal — we all knew she had been well taken care of. As the final days approached, my elderly mother came to stay with my sister around the clock. Again, without being asked, the staff transferred my sister to an empty double room so that my mother could sleep in a bed rather than the recliner chair. This was so important to both my sister and my mother that she not be alone. I can’t thank the staff enough for taking such good care of my sister and my family. They treated us like we were part of their own family. Every single one of them softened the blow of a difficult time. I recommend Wingate at Haverhill without reservation.
