A new Thanksgiving tradition! My mother and I, neither of whom cook, had created a Thanksgiving tradition of visiting a previous restaurant in Thurmont. We’d gather whatever family and friends were interested that year, have a nice drive, and then eat ourselves full on home cooking we didn’t have to cook. When Cozy Inn closed we were desperate to find someplace to continue the trend. That’s when we found General Picketts Buffet, and it made our family day all the better. Now, I’ll admit that the restaurant, and it’s food selection, is much smaller than Cozy. That being said, we can still get a table for 8 – 10 and we still eat ourselves full on all the Thanksgiving staples… and then some. The staff are friendly, the food is good, and it’s a great experience overall. I’ll suggest you get there at open, like we did in Thurmont, so you can beat the lunch rush. The best part of General Picketts is its location; you’re in Gettysburg, adjacent to the battlefield and monuments! After we fill up at General Picketts, we spend the afternoon driving around Gettysburg National Military Park. Nothing better than filling your brain with history and having good discussions. The only disappointment is that, being Thanksgiving, the visitor’s center is closed. Still, there’s plenty to see… as long as the weather holds out. So, if you’re looking for good food, nice service, and a great location for further activities… you can’t go wrong with General Picketts.

The choices on the buffet are plentiful but the overall taste of the food is underwhelming. I’m a Southerner who loves home cooked vegetables but the quality of the vegetables on the buffet was average at best. I do give this place four stars because of the cool name and the family friendly atmosphere. And my server discussed college football and the Crimson Tide with me.

I gave one star since the food was delicious going in. However, 3 hours later I found myself so very sick. After midnight I finally gave in and went to the hospital and was admitted for food poisoning. Upon checking in, the nurses weren’t surprised after I told them where and what I ate. I had to be admitted for the night and was given 4 liters of fluid and nausea medicine. Way to ruin a vacation.

Staff was excellent. They were attentive and courteous. The food, however was dry and seemed to be sitting for a while. They had pork and sauerkraut and fish and unfortunately the smell permeated the entire restaurant. So in short, thumbs up for the staff, thumbs down for the food.

It’s a great Civil War Battle of Gettysburg reenactment! As me(Confederates) marched in, I expected an easy victory. Little did I know. My taste buds charged and charged, to be constantly repeled by the stubborness of the bland bread. Finally what seemed to be a breakthrough with the lemon meringue pie, was my high water mark. Then it just rained down artillery, and I found myself in the hotel restroom mourning the loss of a victory. The South lost.
