As another reviewer wrote, Dave Porcella keeps hanging in there in a small, privately owned music store, in the face of big-box and chain competition. Stock is limited, but they’ll order anything for you, and pricing is very competitive. I purchased microphones for less, and mike stands for the same price, as a guitar-centered chain store in town was asking. I firmly believe that we must all support local businesses if we want them to survive, and Dave Porcella’s willingess to go the extra mile to serve his customers makes his store my first stop for anything music-related.

These guys keep hanging in there, and apparently have been, for about 100 years. With their tiny store they can’t stock a lot of stuff, but it’s amazing how they cover all the bases. They sell, service, and I’m pretty sure rent band instruments, and Mr. Porcella is apparently a really good teacher for getting kids going on their band«axe» of choice. They have a lot of band books, and in general band seems to be one of their mainstays. They also have sound system stuff but this is where I want to say: Porcella’s did NOT install those obnoxious speakers in downtown Gilroy. That was … another music store. Of course they have guitars, violins, a uke or three, kazoos, flutes, all the usual music store stuff. I was just in there a few days ago and was very pleasantly surprised to find they have quite a few harmonicas. Lee Oskars and replacement reeds for same, bunch of Suzukis which is really amazing, and some very interesting Hohner stuff. They’re well worth a visit because they might just surprise you…

You couldn’t give them a five, because the store is too small. But for what they have they do a great job. I’ve bought instruments there and music books and gear and each time they’ve been great. Dave Porcella tuned an autoharp for me and the price was really fair. Maybe I’m a hypocrite for complimenting a little store that doesn’t have much while panning a store like Guitar Center, but the truth is, I have a lot of respect for these struggling local businesses. They’ve had GIANT stores come in and Walmarts and Costcos and they still manage to make a living.
