Skeel’s once was a very popular restaurant in Morgan Hill that was famous for their Orange Freeze drinks and special burgers back in the late 40’s early 50’s. Although they are no longer in business and the original building resides in a middle school in Morgan Hill, this funnel cake shop has taken their famous name and is keeping it alive. Skeel’s is a very bright red old school, almost farmhouse looking building that’s cranking out some yummy desserts but their most popular and main seller here are the funnel cakes. Unlike most funnel cake shops at theme parks they offer both mini and regular size and at good prices. Between both sizes and multiple toppings a funnel cake can run you anywhere from $ 5.99 to no more than $ 12, that’s a steal if you ask me because a fully loaded funnel cake at Great America is about $ 16. You can get your funnel cakes plain or with the standard powdered sugar but they also have various other toppings such as: *Chocolate Syrup *Caramel Syrup *Apple Topping *Strawberry Topping *Vanilla or Chocolate Soft Serve Ice Cream I’ve been here a few times and these are the best funnel cakes I’ve ever had, no joke. They are made fresh to order, come out piping hot, nice golden brown color, super crispy exterior while the inside is extremely fluffy and moist how a perfect funnel cake should be. I usually get a mini funnel cake with a few toppings and it is enough to hit the spot, the regular size with a few toppings or fully loaded is perfect if a couple people are going to share it. Make sure when you visit Gilroy Gardens you make it a priority to come here and while the park may open at 10am Skeel’s does not open until 12pm but trust me it’s worth the wait!

Quite possibly the only thing worth eating within the park grounds… This place is impossible to miss, as long as you’re keeping an eye out for the big red barn(not to mention a never ending, though extremely efficient line)… You may have had Funnel Cake’s in the past, but these little guys are on another level… The batter was perfectly crisp(made to order), with the insides warm/tender… The cake alone could’ve been eaten completely plain, sans the toppings as the batter reminded me of those addictive mini donuts at the pier… The generous toppings as well were literally,(pun intended), the«Icing on the Cake…» I opted for Strawberry & the compote was also very well done… Ultra fresh strawberries, not too sweet, not too sour & not at all overpowering(perfect fruit to funnel cake ratio). Skeel’s btw was named after a popular restaurant in the 40’s &50’s along the Monterey Highway in Morgan Hill. Just don’t ask for their signature«Orange Freeze», as per one of the employees(though it’s plastered on the menu), «They don’t make those anymore…» Regardless, they do have other goodies as well, including soft serve sundaes, cones & cotton candy(though I’ll be back every visit for their amazing funnel cakes…) Tip however: Don’t make the same mistake I did & order the Mini @ $ 7.49. Mini is no joke(taken literally), as the entire funnel cake could’ve fit in the palm of my hand. For a mere $ 4 more, the Regular is MASSIVE& could easily be split between 2 or 3 people. Enjoy…
