Are you looking to be judged, berated and demeaned? You’ve come to the right place!!! I bought a groupon for 10 Curves«drop-in» training sessions. I called ahead to verify that I could walk in at anytime. After getting verification, I arrived after work. I get there, park right outside, and peer inside the open door to what appears to be a re-purposed living room with gym equipment along the walls with about 10 post-menopausal women dancing in the carpeted space in between. Hesitant to enter, I try to walk in, but a woman who appears to be a trainer is standing at the entry, staring at me. Me: «I’m here for the training sessions??? I have a groupon…» Her: «Oh. I spoke to you earlier. I forgot to tell you that there’s Zumba tonight.» She pauses, continues to stare at me, and continues to block the door. Me: «ooook…so…should I leave?» She suggests I do Zumba, so I agree because I’m already there. She finally moves to let me in. Such a warm welcome! I join the group of completely unsynchronized 50 – 60 somethings for the remainder of the session, which for a second, I actually find endearing. Class ends and I approach the trainer. Her: «Well I don’t have time to train you now. So we will just have to do a body assessment and paperwork.» Ok fine… I didn’t come for only a Zumba class, but whatever. She asks me what my weight loss goals are. When I ask for her feedback on what a good weight loss goal is, she appears to be annoyed that I don’t have one in mind. She pressures me to come up with one, without providing any guidance whatsoever on what an appropriate goal is. So then I suggest that I make a goal based on the fact that I have 10 sessions. I suggest that 15 lbs would be a good goal over the course of 10 sessions. She looks at me in complete disbelief that I could throw that number out there. «How can you lose 15 lbs??? that is NOT possible! How will you do that over 2.5 weeks???» I tell her that I am planning to go once a week since I go to cardio barre 2x a week and pilates 2x a week. «Well I cannot help you if you only come 1x/week! You need to stop those other classes and come here at least 3x a week!!!» I explain that I am unwilling to give up my other activities to apparently join Curves on a full-time basis. She continues to pressure me to give up my other activities to join Curves, then continues with this body assessment. Her: «So. When did you gain all this weight?» Me: «Uh. I’ve always been this size.» WOW. RUDE! I’m certainly not the largest person that’s walked into this place(but may be the youngest). She continues to measure me, and make passive aggressive comments towards the fact that I am taking cardio barre and pilates classes. She finishes the assessment and asks when I want to schedule the next(first) training session. I, at this point, having been berated, am hesitant to even commit to a time. I tell her that my schedule is pretty busy. So she suggests coming over lunch. I look around at this space that is literally the size of a living room, no mirrors, just carpet, wall, equipment placed along the wall, a curtain in the back. Me: «Well there’s no place to shower and I don’t want to go back to work covered in sweat» Her: «Well there might just be some days when you have to go to work sweating!!!» What? NO there doesn’t?! Where is this coming from? Her: «Well we have Zumba on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7» Me: «Ok, then let me do Tuesday at 6:30 and do Zumba after» Her: «Zumba is on Mondays and Thursdays» WHAT? The conversation went from rude to nonsensical. I changed my appointment to 7, walked to my car and immediately looked up the groupon return policy. I DONOTRECOMMEND. AVOID!!!

Last week I decided to start my New Years Resolution, to take better care of my self. I’ve recently gained weight for last time. Fed up with myself and my lack of motivation, I dragged myself to Curves Zumba class. I was hesitate, but I was greeted with a smile. I felt welcomed and jumped right into class. It was an awesome class! I had fun and became an instant fan of this Curves and their friendly staff. So much I am going twice a week. Currently I am in my second week and I have already lost close to 2lbs. I am a lot more energized and my spirit has been uplifted. I owe it to the ladies of Curves. It’s a very comfortable environment, where you don’t have to worry about judgment. And just have fun among other women. I highly recommend this place. It’s a must try!
