Freedom Pier is located on King Street and the Delaware River in Gloucester City, NJ. It’s a working class neighborhood, a large percentage of Gloucester City residents are of Irish ancestry; the ninth-highest of any municipality in the United States, and third-highest in New Jersey as of a year 2000 census. The history of this property pre-dates historical records. There is evidence here of native Indian occupation that dates back eight thousand years. From 1945 – 1991, the United States Coast Guard occupied this area until they deeded the property to Gloucester City. Here is a write-up about the history We enjoy walking around Freedom Pier and Proprietors Park on the weekends. It has a awesome view of the Delaware River with the Walt Whitman Bridge peering down proudly in the backdrop. This pier kind of reminds me of the Race Street Pier in Philly. For now, I would only visit the Freedom Pier during the afternoon, night time can be sketchy. Times have been tough due to the economy but I believe this area is a diamond in the rough and will be gentrified. I have read that the owners of Ott’s Restaurants are going to build a large, square footage restaurant with outdoor seating and stage overlooking the Delaware River. Here is a sneak peak of the architectural blue print/proposal (Holliday Architects). I have also read about the possibility of a Ice Skating rink on the Pier. I hope these projects come to fruition. Looks like some internet domain broker is already sitting on a web address… those clever ba$tards :-) Places to eat nearby: Max’s Seafood Café:
