Impromptu visit to this tasting room, largely because of the unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon, resulted in an unexpected series of pleasures. We had tasted the wines at a festival but had never visited. Although busy on this sunny afternoon, the staff made everyone welcome and poured a strong selection of wines to suit any taste. We selected a smooth muscat to share with the specular view from a bluff overlooking the James. Well worth the trip.

Boo… went today for third time. Not a good experience. Tasting was really rushed. Before we put down our glass the woman had the bottle of the next one ready to pour. We got through the 10 wines in less than 10 minutes. The pours were also really bad. Less than ¼″ of wine in each pour. Barely enough to taste the wines. Never seen so little wine provided at a tasting. In addition the wines tasted bad, no where near as good as what we tried in previous occasions. No body across the board and way too sweet. The saving grace was the sangria at the end. Unfortunately I won’t be back. Shame because it is in a nice location.

Wow, what a great little Family owned winery. Went to the wine pick up party on June 6, 2015. Had a live band and food vendor. Had. Free tasting, wine club members get free tastings plus 3 friends. Tried some great Apple wines and a strawberry Apple. I think there was 12 different wines for tasting. Had a great guy named Mark they was serving the wine inside. He was very very friendly and very funny. He loves his job. Met the owners Bruce and Cathy.

One of the most memorable winery experiences we’ve had so far. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. This is a great local hole in the wall spot. Don’t judge them by the appearance on the outside. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in. The staff is very friendly. The wines are delicious! My fiancé and I arrived at 4PM on Sunday and even though they close at 5PM we did not feel rushed. Dot and Robert were very personable and their daughter Kaleigh is so smart! We will definitely be coming back soon!

Pretty little place in Goochland; I enjoyed our experience here very much! My boyfriend & I came here one weekend, when we were still living in Richmond. I had never been to a winery and so I Unilocaled around and found this one. Not disappointing! Of course, since the place is only open on the weekends, we arrived and it took a while to be helped. The woman who helped us though, was super friendly and knowledgeable. The place is nice — small but nice. Nice view in the back, and the tasting room itself is cute too. Fireplace, a bar area, and wine barrels turned into tables. We sat at one of those. I took pictures galore of course! The wine tasting was fun — getting a little buzz for the best price! I’m a sweet wine kinda gal, so those were my favorites. I don’t remember how much we paid, as this visit was months ago, but I remember it wasn’t expensive it at all! We even had the plate of cheese, meat, chocolate, and nuts, and I think that was only $ 5! We ended up leaving with 3 bottles of wine. Great experience for my first winery! :)

Enjoyed the visit. Majority of wines were on sweeter side, but wouldn’t use word«sweet.» But for dryer red wines(which are our fav), Byrd definitely has some good options too. The back porch is inviting; and the owners are so kind and caring about their guests and guests’ experience.. Had a great Saturday afternoon here.

Another winner. Located directly off state route 6 between Richmond and Scottsville, on the banks of the James River, Byrd Cellars is more proof that Virginia can make some very impressive wine and keep the prices less than $ 20 a bottle. Not one bottle is over $ 20 here, and they have a terrific variety — three kinds of apple wine(very sweet to bone dry), two chardonnays, table whites, Norton, Merlot, Syrah, and even a Cab Sauv(one of the few Virginia wineries to grow Cab Sauv). And once again — all bottles less than $ 20! And if you buy three or more, they take $ 1 off each bottle. Their goal is simple: Help folks spread the word about Virginia wine at affordable prices. And the wines are good to excellent. The unoaked chardonnay and their Petit Verdot were my favorites. A Viognier(bone dry and excellent) is coming in 2012. The winemaker confessed several times as not being a fan of Viognier, but that didn’t stop him from creating a fine one. The property offers seating on the banks of the James River – several picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. Good all season spot for sure.

I visited this winery on opening weekend. It’s still getting it’s footing, but it definitely seems like a cool place. Byrd Cellars is owned by three couples, each of which owns a vineyard near the tasting room. The couples combine their grapes and one of the husbands serves as chief winemaker. The tasting room is small but nice and new with a fireplace, cushy sofas, a few tables and chairs and a scenic patio with more places to relax. I can totally see hanging out inside with a glass or bottle by the fireplace during this fall and winter. Their first wine lineup includes two apple wines, a blend, a Norton aged in stainless steel and a norton aged in oak. One of the owners did my tasting and she was super friendly and knowledgeable. I’m not much of a fruit wine person, but I liked that they make their apple wines wine-style, not fruit-juice style so even the sweet one wasn’t super sweet. Of the normal wines, the Norton aged in stainless steel was my favorite. I took a bottle of that and the blend home with me. I was also impressed with the affordable prices: each bottle was just $ 12. I’m definitely looking forward to returning to this winery as it gets more established and trying more Byrd Cellars creations! It’s a great little drive from Richmond or stop on the way to more wineries in Charlottesville. The owner also told me they’ll be planning lots of fun upcoming events, and wine festivals, which will be mentioned on their web site and Facebook page. Some of them will be held in the different vineyards and will have activities for kids along with wine.
