We enjoyed Despot Day, a friendly event with good beer, food and music. Had the butter pecan despot beer. It was great — well balanced, sweet without being cloying and creamy. The brewery is in the Goochland Countryside. It doesn’t get more authentic than this.

We came up from Chesapeake and were advised to make this a «must go to «visit for our 2 day self guided brewery tour of greater Richmond. The place is very different than all of the other old warehouse type breweries that we have been to in any city. I give them a big thumbs up for that. They have a serious operation with what appears to be the capacity to make a lot of beer. Now… if they would just start to make some good beer! One of my friend LOVES stouts so he was excited to try their offerings, then he ended up pouring it out. They had 6 different types of stouts, one IPA, and a Belgium triple. The triple was the least offensive of all of the beers, but I still did not finish it. They certainly did draw a big crowd on the day we were there, but they had the tiniest of tasting rooms, and absolutely NO protected outdoor tasting area on a day with well below freezing temps. One would think that they could have rented a tent and made some effort to give their customers some protection from the 21 degree day, but they didnt. There was an acoustic guitar/singer in the corner taking up even more of the precious indoor standing room only. Between the horrible beers and lack of adequate tasting room, we will NEVER go back.

A great brewery. Dog(friendly and good around people) and children friendly. Has a wonder view of Virginia Farmland and a very friendly staff. The beer was excellent. Can’t wait to come back.

It feels really great to support a local business as wonderful as this one is. From responsibly growing the ingredients for their beers to using fresh mountain water free of chemicals, the beer is as delicious and clean tasting as it could be. And then there is the business itself. Run by great people that care about the local economy and environment, their passion for what they do is reflected in the quality of their employees and their approach to customer service. I’ve drank almost all of their beers and loved every one of them. I’ve visited the brewery and had a wonderful time. I’ve been to their local events at a variety of bars and restaurants and always enjoyed myself.

Great scenery and innovative beer, but they need to expand. They don’t make enough beer to support the quality of their products. Be sure to taste their Enlightened Despot and blueberry IPA(ask them to mix the blueberry with their chocolate stout, it’s amazing). Pack a picnic and take in the views and most importantly, the beer.

I have to admit… I made a mistake. After drinking their Enlightened Despot, arguably the best beer I have ever had, I had to write and apologize. I also gave Lickinghole’s clusterbomb of a Spring release day a second chance. Much MUCH better the next time. They used bracelets for the ordering system so there was no longer a need to stand in line(and get cut by someone holding a place for a friend). The staff I came into contact with was friendly and helpful. I still think the location of this place is, um, a bit out of the way to say the least. And is it me, or does it smell as if they are really close to a cat food production plant?(I mean it, the smell on a windy day is pure Purina Cat Chow). Regardless, I have to give LCCB props for being part of the reinvigoration of craft beer in Richmond, a city that is on a real roll when it comes to breweries. I am no longer inclined to send my tourist friends who drink elsewhere, Richmond is a SERIOUS craft beer town. Plenty to do for the kids, lots of space to bring a dog(but please pick up of course) and a pumpkin and sunflower patch with all-you-can-pick priviledges! That was certainly a bonus this time out. I think that with time, this little brewery on the prairie may become a big story, especially if they continue to make beers like Enlightened Despot and Supreme Leader. I could describe them, but as they were limited releases, I can’t guarantee you’ll ever get to taste them. Still, keep an ear out for seasonal favorites and their variants, and GETTHEREEARLY to assure you’ll get the beer you want.

Very cool place. Had outdoor band for Friday night concert series so lots of eclectic beer people. Very sweet(as in accommodating) kid at the bar that gave flight recommendations and even gave me a sample of a kicked beer. Only real issue was the glut of unnecessary speed bumps on the way the tasting room.

Great country farm brewery setting. Nice beers, many barrel aged. Watch out they seem to always charge me for an extra pint. I wonder if it’s just my bad luck, or it’s typical. Just something to keep an eye on. Also a bit on the pricy side. I got 3 drafts and one bottle to go and my bill was $ 50 before tip. Like I said, I was charged for 4 beers and a bottle. Good beer though, might just stick with Mekong next time. Had a whole flounder, 4 egg rolls 4 amazing stouts and an iPa for $ 60.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about LCCB and their staff! The area is beautiful and secluded, the beer is delicious, and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. It’s great to have a place filled with down to earth people that feels homey!

Hands down, best brewery in Richmond. The only reason for the 4 stars is that it’s so far away! This is the only brewery that I’ve brought my kids to. They have a playset and tons of room for them to run around and lots of people bring their families and dogs so you won’t feel uncomfotable. The beer is my absolute favorite in Richmond. The recent release that we went to was insane but definitely worth it! The staff has always been helpful and friendly and they’ve always had a variety of food trucks when we’ve gone. I always order Lickinghole beer if its on the menu at restaurants. I really with it wasn’t so darn far away but it is a really nice outdoor space and totally worth the drive.

Best craft brewery in the RVA area. I love how it is out of the way and has a beautiful background. I have been here a few times and I love getting the flights. My favorite beer is the Three Chopt Tripel that has been aged in Tequila barrels. It has a great hint of lime and a wonderful aftertaste. I cannot wait for the bourbon aged barrel brews to come out. I usually come here with a few friends and we sit out on the picnic tables and enjoy the scenery.

Very nice brewery, beautiful location, high quality beers. Went this past Saturday around 2 pm, and there was a little bit of a wait because they only had 1 person working. Three of us all got flights which allowed us to taste 12 beers. I appreciated that they write the name of the beer on the tasting glass because I can barely remember 4, let alone 12. Very interesting flavors and a lot of offerings. Would love to see some food for sale, even if it is pre-packaged snacks like chips/crackers/popcorn. There was also a musician later in the day. Overall, highly recommend the trip for those that like craft beers and even if you dont, give it a try!
