Midwest Preservation Caretakers of Cultural history and art, no matter from what country, are to be admired. The Sod House Museum in Gothenburg, Nebraska, is part time capsule of American Pioneer life and part Art Gallery. The Sod house is authentically replicated and well kept. The barbed wire, full-scale, sculptures of Bison and Native Americans, are an interesting use of the material. Many of us have studied the Sod Houses in history but actually being inside one personally gives a different perspective. I can appreciate, from an Architectural perspective, the innovation of these early settlers as America expanded westward. A great example of necessity being the mother of invention. I appreciate all the efforts of the staff on maintaining this part of Pioneer American history.

Great place to stop, gas up, see a Sod House and catch some history. Not far from Pony Express Station and Museum. Worth a visit!

While traveling from Michigan to Colorado we pulled in for gas at the station in front of the Sod House Museum. We accomplished everything we needed to at the gas station… gas, restroom(clean) and snacks. Wanting to stretch our legs, we found the little sod house behind the gas station parking lot. There are two interesting sculptures and the sod house. The little house is a humbling reminder of how determined and resourceful the plains pioneers were. We were happy to have ‘happened upon’ the Sod House Museum. It was a gas stop with an added history lesson.

This is another bit of history located in Gothenburg Nebraska. Visiting here, along with the Pony Express Station makes a nice rest stop. Then have some coffee and at Lasso Café before you hit the highway.
