Covered Bridge Park is a magical place home to Wisconsin’s last covered bridge. In late spring, summer, and early fall, sitting in the spongy grass along the Milwaukee River beneath swaying deciduous trees, sharing a bottle of crisp, white wine with someone special, is one of the most satisfying ways I’ve found to watch the sun go down in southeastern Wisconsin; however, plenty of other people seem to share this sentiment, so be prepared to share the park with many a wedding party looking for photo opportunities, family reunions, and other outdoor parties. If you’re truly lucky, you’ll meet two startlingly beautiful — tame, intelligent, and lazy, too — dogs whose owner’s property shares the entrance to the park. Unfortunately, too rare are the days when you’ll find yourself alone in this pea-sized park. We have actually been asked to remove ourselves from a certain picnic table so some amateur photographer could snap pictures of two soon-to-be-divorcees. And I’ll say right now the way they asked was none too polite or pleasant. Sadface. If you aren’t a sappy romatic like myself, bring your fishing line. Or launch your canoe. Or binocular up some bird action. Or grill a burger. Actually, I highly suggest you bring the briquettes because there are grilling sites available too. The covered«Red Bridge’ is notoriously covered in decades-old graffiti, so if you bring your camera, take pictures of that. Or the frogs in the gentle bends of the river. Or play a game of Pooh Sticks on the foot bridge further into the park. Just enjoy.
