Their was not one redeeming thing about any part of the food I ordered. I got the flounder with hush puppies, fries, slaw and peach cobbler. My friend got the apple cobbler milk shake. I took 2 bites of the fish and stopped… Not chancing getting sick! The fries were frozen run of the mill Fries and the slaw was JUST cabbage and dressing which doesn’t work for me. The pupp’s were OK but seriously … The cobbler was a BLOB of sticky gummy flour slop with canned peaches and my friends milk shake was tasteless! need I say more?

They have a really good breakfast menu too. The problem with that? They are HORRIBLYUNDERSTAFFED at breakfast times. IF you get seated, it’s going to be an hour for a simple eggs and bacon plate with grits, which while tasty and cheap, is not worth that kind of wait.

Being raised on Eastern Carolina BBQ and I smoke my own, my wife says I’m a BBQ snob. But Hursey’s BBQ wasn’t bad at all. We were headed up to VA and was getting hungry as it was way past lunch time. We saw the sign for Hursey’s and pulled off of the interstate. The BBQ was smoky and moist but had a really fine chop on it. Slaw was the green mayo based slaw but wasn’t to bad as I am used to the Eastern Carolina red vinegar based slaw. The dip was slightly syrupy with plenty of red pepper flakes and had a sweet taste up front before the heat showed up. Hush puppies were good with a slight buttery flavor. I got a sample of the brunswick stew and my wife and I decided to take a quart with us for supper the next night. It was really good with a lot of shredded chicken, plenty of vegetables and seasoned just right. Some of the best we’ve had. Service was A-OK. As a BBQ snob, I can say if your a BBQ fan, Hursey’s is worth a try.

What can I say by giving one star, well I’ll say this, the barbecue tasted good, not great, but good, maybe it would’ve been great if customer service had been great. So now let me tell you about my first experience and my last experience at Hersey’s barbecue in the Graham North Carolina area I came in at 3:10 in the afternoon practically nobody in there and I’m sure not because the food is bad but because it’s the time of day I was able to be seen by the counter immediately by the young lady they’re servicing it I told her I want to take out I told her I wanted two pounds of pork and two sandwiches with slaw. All is well to this point. Then they could not find a pen for me to sign my credit card voucher that seem to take about 25 or 30 seconds the cook didn’t have one he had to go find someone with a pen. Then my order came and I love my sandwich tripping with that vinegar-based sauce I like at least two containers per sandwich which meant the quantity they gave me I still needed to get at least two or four more for my 2 pounds of barbecue I was asked to pay $.50 for the two additional containers I looked like I must of been shocked which I was and then I basically took my credit card out paid the $.50 and then got in my car and I’m leaving this review. Since I am driving it is being dictated so spelling errors are my iPhone’s problem.

BBQ was really good for a vinegar based East Carolina style BBQ! We had great service from both the hostess and the waitstaff! I highly recommend the cobbler-a-la-mode! The potato salad was normal. The onion rings had a nice batter that wasn’t too heavily seasoned so you could easily taste the sweet Vidalia onion underneath. The coleslaw was standard vinegar based type, not my favorite but at least it was fresh. Yay. Pass over the apple turnover and the banana pudding. Both were too Piccadilly cafeteria-like. Be sure to pick up a bottle of their own BBQ sauce to take home with you! There is nothing like it! So good! Definitely wanna return.

My first BBQ sandwich! I have always gotten a chopped BBQ plate but never a sandwich! Who knew I was missing something so good all along. The BBQ had a nice smoky flavor and the slaw on it is also good. The best part is the BBQ sauce you can put on the sandwich! It’s so yummy I’ve had it for lunch twice this week! Then again I can’t help it when co-workers want to pay for my meal. The best deal is on Wednesdays when BBQ sandwiches are half price. I’ve heard good things about the broasted chicken but I haven’t tried it for myself. Overall I would eat it here over and over again as long as I don’t gain too much weight from the BBQ.

Really enjoyed breakfast there with my son. Eggs cooked just right. Great country ham & even better sausage biscuit. Would recommend to all.

It seems that things have changed a little since the last time I visited Hursey’s. To be fair, it’s still a very solid establishment with good food and friendly people. It’s just that the food isn’t as good as I remembered it to be. Specifically, when I recently tried the ribs(both pork and beef), they were somewhat dry and lacking in BBQ sauce, particularly the pork ribs. I also remember the beef ribs being larger in portion. The chopped BBQ pork was good, but I felt like it lacked the smokey flavor I was hoping for. Without a doubt, it’s still a great place to get chopped BBQ pork. The brunswick stew, however, didn’t disappoint. I think it’s what Hursey’s does best, and would recommend it to anyone. It’s basically a large portion of BBQ pork in a rich, flavorful tomato-based stew, and that’s all you really need to know. Go get you some now before you miss out. I also tried their milkshakes and wasn’t too impressed with the peach flavor — it was too icy and not creamy enough. The banana pudding was good, though — a lot thicker and tastier. Overall, it wasn’t as great of an experience as I had remembered having at Hursey’s in the past. That won’t stop me from stopping by if I’m in the area, and it shouldn’t stop you, either.

I have to admit, this was tasty barbecue. The flavor was really nice, but the texture was one step below our local BBQ chain, Hannah’s.(Hannah’s doesn’t chop their ‘Q as finely.) I ordered a pork plate, which consisted of chopped pork barbecue, white coleslaw, French fries, and hush puppies. Sweet tea with lemon. Price: $ 8.35. The SWEETTEA came out first, and it was really delicious. Perfection! 5⁄5. FWIW, at 3:45 p.m., I was the ONLY diner in the building. On my way into the office this morning, I noticed that they were slammed during breakfast, @9:30 a.m. The cushioned seats were very comfortable, and the wood décor pleasing to the eye. The restaurant was SUPERCLEAN, and the sano rating was 98.0. The barbecue plate took about ten minutes to arrive. The PORKBARBECUE itself was moist and the eastern vinegar taste was really nice and subtle. Seldom do I find barbecue that doesn’t need something to enhance the taste, but this location of Hursey’s BBQ accomplished the feat. I couldn’t detect any smoky flavor notes. I still pick up a little grainy texture to the actual meat, that I haven’t run across at many other barbecue restaurants. Personally, I think that the meat is just chopped too finely, at least that’s my opinion. This kept me from giving Hursey’s/Graham four stars. 3.5÷5.(Next time I will sample the sliced BBQ for comparison.) I also think that they could have been a tad more generous with the SERVINGSIZE of the barbecue. At Lexington #1 and Cook’s for instance, one receives twice the amount of BBQ for the same price that Hursey’s charges. 2.5÷5. The WHITECOLESLAW was cold, sweet, and creamy — I liked it a lot. 3.75÷5. The five HUSHPUPPIES were golf ball sized, and not as crunchy as I prefer, but on a positive note, they weren’t greasy. They were also VERY sweet, which some people object to, but I don’t mind — better sweet, than greasy or burned. I would prefer a more oniony taste profile, but c’est la vie. 3⁄5. The FRENCHFRIES were the shoe string variety, and they were sizzling hot — right out of the fryer. Not super crispy, but with the addition of a little salt and ketchup, I was good to go. 3⁄5 The SERVICE from my waitress was FANTASTIC! The young lady who waited on me was nothing short of a sweetheart. She was very friendly, she kept my glass full, and she wished me a happy holiday. The manager at the register was very nice as well. 5⁄5.

Woof! I et a lot of BBQ around the state and this was some of the worst bbq I have ever had. Pork was so mush and no texture. Hushpuppies were cold. Fries were soggy. Save your time and money

Excellent service was quick and very friendly. I ordered the pulled pork tray which came with slaw and hush puppies. All the food was excellent and tasted fresh. I did not see a smoker behind the restaurant, however, so I wonder where the meat is cooked? I’d stop here again while driving through. Not the best BBQ I’ve had, but way better than fast food.

Outstanding. Like a previous reviewer I was headed along the interstate west to east and hungry. Funny but same thing happened, farther off the main road than I thought but kept telling my self to give it another minute of driving. And then I saw it. Parking lot full. Good sign. Went in. Busy but not to capacity. Seated right away and pretty much served right away all by pleasant servers. Had the basics. Plate of BBQ that was delicious. I loved the minced cole slaw. And of course the hush puppies made just the way I like them. I would have preferred French fries a bit more crunchy. Sweet tea was perfect for quenching my thirst. All for under $ 9 before tip and I was happy to leave the gratuity. Worth the side trip. And I will look for a chance to return.

As far as the bbq, you can get better at Cookout if you can’t get to Lexington. Their chicken is very good and so is their potato salad.

I decided to go here while driving home to Raleigh. I found the barbecue just adequate. It had a weird sweet flavor to the pork. I wanted to try another barbecue place and I was sadly disappointed. I will probably not go here again.

BBQ is always a difficult review because there are so many different opinions on it. In my estimation, it’s best just to take the Q for what it is and judge it accordingly. That’s what makes Hursey’s so difficult: there’s very little to take it for. The BBQ itself is unremarkable in every possible way. It’s not that it’s bad… it’s just not good, either. It’s so average that it’s hard to classify it as anything more than a pile of slightly mushy, very neutral-flavored meat. The sauce on the side is OK — almost a cross between a Lexington-style and Eastern-style sauce. It’s got a sweet /tangy /spicy quality that definitely improves the otherwise bland meat. There are, however, two impressive standouts at Hursey’s: the chicken and the hush puppies. The«broasted»(aka«fried») chicken is tasty, a tad greasy, and meaty and is probably the best local chicken around. The hush puppies are nice little greasy balls of fried cornbread that are difficult to improve upon. Aside from that, the wait staff is pleasant, though occasionally slow. The breakfast is… well, it’s just not good.

Our March 2012 barbecue eating tour started with lunch at Hursey’s in Graham while driving from RDU to Greensboro. Ms T had a pork sandwich and I had a two meat platter with pork and ribs. The pork was a medium fine chop. It was clean and moist and A-Ok. I just did not get a lot of flavor, either pork or smoke. Ms T said it made a decent sandwich. It was fine, but not memorable. The sauce is a somewhat sweet, tangy sauce that is slightly thickened. It reminded me of some I have had that are from Tennessee. The ribs were very unfortunate on this particular day. I think they were boiled or baked(or both, meaning done to mush) and worst of all, they were rancid. I made them edible by scraping of the fat which got rid of much of the rancidity. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how this happens. The process producing rancid fat takes some time. I suspect they were rancid before they cooked them. This is not the same as stale ribs that were cooked and refrigerated a week. I am not rating Hursey’s for the ribs. They would be 1 star at best. I just have to quell the urge to order ribs outside of the Memphis or KC areas. The hushpuppies are loaded with onion for those of you that like them that way. The slaw is very fine with a light, creamy and slightly sweet dressing. The green beans were very standard style and needed salt.

Driving down 85 to Charlotte on Saturday, I saw a billboard for Hursey’s about the time I was hungry. I decided to go there. It was farther from the interstate than I’d expected — I was about to give up and make a U-turn when I saw the sign. Here are the notes I jotted down: Good pork. Great sauce. Excellent strawberry cobbler. Minced coleslaw too sweet. Unremarkable brunswick stew. Disliked fries.

There is probably something for everyone here. I’ve been coming to one or the other of the Hursey’s locations, from Greensboro, for years, almost on a weekly basis. The BBQ pork is chopped a little finer than I normally like, but the flavor is very good, not smokey but still good. This BBQ is kind of a hybrid but has vinegar in it, not exactly Eastern or Lexington, but it works for me. The sauce on the table is different than what is applied during cooking, and is more like Lexington style. The slaw is white & is not overly sweet, combines well with the pork. The fries are excellent, and the hush puppies can be very good, but they seem to be a hit or miss item. Their fried chicken is actually broasted, and is excellent, crispy and moist. I also like their fried flounder & popcorn shrimp, it is consistently flavorful and with a good breading. This location on NC Hwy 119 in Graham, the much newer of the two, does serve a decent dog, and does breakfast as well. They have much more kitchen space here than the original one on Church Street in Burlington. Both have drive-thrus. The service is always good, even when it gets crowded at peak hours. Go. You’ll have to look hard to find another BBQ place that serves so much so well. The only complaint I’ve ever had here is that over the last several years they have steadily reduce their portion sizes and raised their prices. — you use to get two pieces of fried chicken on the combo, now you get one — the amount of BBQ on trays and plates is less, and the fish and shrimp combo has been reduced as well. Still good food, but not cheap

Amble up to the Burlington, NC area and you’ll find old fashioned bbq joints called Hursey’s Bar-B-Q. These family style locales are full of tasty meat and wholesome sides. The sign proudly proclaimed the home of «broasted chicken» — which I had to Google. Wanting to taste this technique, we both ordered chicken and bbq plates full of meat, slaw, hushpuppies and fries The chicken was delicious! I got dark meat which was juicy and fried crisp. The batter on the chicken was flavorful, but not thick. The pork was wonderfully moist and not too vinegary. Tasty, but simple. Brian liked the slaw because of its small cut, I say«meh.» This was also the first place I tasted the NC-local fave Cheerwine. This bubbly, spicy, cherry concoction is now a fave. It’s sweet and wonderfully southern. A wonderfully southern meal to be repeated for sure!
