Narrow lanes and a $ 1 toll to get onto«the island» via this bridge(but no toll on the way out) makes me not a fan. Once I drove over this bridge and didn’t have a an American dollar but I had some random Canadian change, so the nice toll taker(there’s a good mix of nice and annoyed) accepted it. But don’t do that. I don’t think they like it. Also, don’t give them a $ 5 bill to pay for the 4 cars behind you, because given the right toll taker, they will roll their eyes at you and make you feel like a chump. Well, the feelings part is on you, but the eye rolling is very much real. The asphalt on this bridge can be very icy and slippery at times in the winter. And people drive like wild animals and tailgate you if you actually drive the 45 mph speed limit(in the right lane!). They also change lanes if they get annoyed and that’s supposedly not permitted. Freaking animals! This bridge mostly flares my anxiety. I see no other good reason to travel on it unless I’m going to see my dear friend who lives on «the island»(yes, that’s what residents call it– The Island!). It’s the only way in and out! But I’ll save my random acts of kindness for elsewhere.

If your Grandmother is phoning the operators of these bridges as we speak, then you might say«Gran Dialling Bridge!» Well, you wouldn’t be far off, because the name is actually«Grand Island Bridge», and there are two of them. Beautiful lovely old bridges indeed, Maria is right. Both are part of I-190 and they are a few miles apart. One is at the south end of Grand Island, crossing into Tonawanda by the factories. One is at the north end of Grand Island, crossing into the City of Niagara Falls. They lose a star for the combination of having to pay for them(I know it’s only a dollar, but I’m awfully cheap when it comes to these things, despite many like-minded progressive liberal people telling me not to be!), and because the lanes are very skinny, somewhat reminding me of some of the older NY bridges, and if you’re used to the wide promenades of the Peace Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge, then these might be a little unnerving for you. I love driving on them, but I know others who are scared of it. Wonderful views too, sometimes the guard-rails obstruct the view but it’s still gorgeous. You can see all the skyscrapers of Niagara Falls from both of them, especially the more northerly one. And here is some free advice. I will not dress up like a mailman and dance for you anymore, so don’t ask.

Yes, they are bridges. 2 actually. One built some time ago(1935 to be exact), and had two lanes, one for each way. They built the other one(a «twin» of the first) in the 1960s.
These are gorgeous bridges. They have been recently painted and given a facelift of sorts, but they started off very nice to look at. So next time you pay the $ 1 toll and head to Grand Island, take a moment and look at the structure you are about to drive over. Then, assuming you are the passenger, be sure to look around the whole way across, the views are amazing as well. Another reason to go to Canada via the Rainbow Bridge.
