Chipeta Golf Course

Chipeta Golf Course was the first golf course I played in Grand Junction. I went with two coworkers of mine early on a Saturday and had wonderful weather and played a really fun game.
We had an early tee time at 7:30am in July to beat the heat. The putting greens at 7:30am were very spongy and soft, making the ball not roll as well and would stick on chip shots. I’m sure the course needs to be watered pretty heavy while it’s cool at night to keep the grass from burning up during the day with 100 degree temperatures in the afternoon. Around 9:30am the greens seemed to dry up, changing the way we played, making the greens much faster and sending the ball further with lighter putts.
The course is wide open, not all that challenging for a long game, but very challenging for a short game. Having only three or four par 4 holes, I was using my 9 iron and pitching wedge more than any other club in my bag. There is only one water hazard hole that is a full lake year round. Throughout the course, there are only a few out of bounds holes other than the home yards along a few fairways. Chipeta is very forgiving for the non consistent and non fairway players, including myself.
The fairways and greens are very well maintained. I think the course was designed with exaggerated sloping greens to make up for the missing long game component. Our threesome did have fun reading the greens from all directions, but found staying below the pin on most all holes was the safest bet.
