Let me prerequisite this review by saying it has been extremely difficult to find food beyond a simple burger in this town. So when I was told that HSU was a very enjoyable atmosphere and experience I hop to it. Unfortunately I am sitting here feeling lied to. The server and the hostess both had horrible attitudes. The good as far as we can tell isn’t amazing. In fact I’d say Fortune House is a much better restaurant than this. Just a table over a customer muttered to their group this place used to be better. I don’t think I will return at this point and I won’t recommend this place to anyone else.

Dropped in for lunch on Sunday with the family. A nice restaurant that looks better inside than out. Had the Sizzling Rice soup which was okay, although the broth was a little bland. The Curry Chicken, however, was very nice indeed and the portion was generous. One complaint, and it’s one that I have for several Chinese restaurants, is that there’s no kids menu and no desire to offer smaller portions, which leaves us with the rather bizarre scene of a 5 year old being overwhelmed by an adult plate of chicken lo mein. That said, she ate half of it.
Overall, decent quality, belly filling portions at a reasonable price.

I’ve been eating at House of Hsu for as long as I can remember and 85% of the time the food has been consistently on point. Occasionally our take out orders get messed up or I find the sweet and sour shrimp is totally lacking veggies.
The service, however, is always consistently bad and unfriendly. I’ve also experienced unnecessarily long waits for food after ordering. The atmosphere is straight out if the 70s which in a way is totally endearing. They still have Christmas light up in July.
Overall, it’s a good choice for Asian food on the west side of Lansing, as long as you hit them on a good night.

We went there on a Saturday night. Not terribly crowded by any means, but service was s-l-o-w. For no apparent reason. All of our food was cold by the time it arrived, and to be honest, it wasn’t all that tasty. Nothing fantastic. It was also on the more expensive side, for the quality we received. I was disappointed because all the reviews pointed to a good place, but I won’t be going back.

We have been going here for over 25 years. The long time owner retired last year so we were a little concerned about change. Good news is the quality of the food is the same. Egg roles are best around, but they have gotten significantly smaller under the new management. Garlic chicken was as good as ever, maybe better! Only complaints, they were playing a radio station with pop music instead of more traditional quite Chinese music. We ordered two entrees and the waiter brought enough steamed white rice for maybe 1 ½ entrees and when I asked for more he said management says additional rice will cost extra. Seriously! Thats like a Mexican restaurant charging for chips, or Outback charging for more bread! Very bad business decision. White rice cost pennies. Bring enough to begin with and don’t charge more when the customer needs more to finish the meal!

(I haven’t worked here for six months – and I’ve spent a lot longer eating here – so I think I’m safe.)
Always good before the ownership change, the new owners have made things just a little better. A few tweaks to tried and true recipes are always welcome. My favorite is the Princess chicken (known as Kung Pao in other places) and an order of potstickers, but there are so many good dishes that it’s hard to choose.
By the way: I marked «I’m not sure» on the wifi, because the former owner never had it, but I’ve heard rumors that wifi is available now.

I have been going here for over 20 years.
Their princess shrimp is DELICIOUS!
I mostly order take out and I don’t really understand the people on the phone, but they make it WELL WORTH going!
When we do dine in, there is this server, she is very straight forward, not friendly, but she is an awesome waitress! She has never gotten our order wrong and we always have hot tea, never had to look for her for refills.
Even though their princess shrimp dish is my favorite, they have a large variety of dishes to pick from.

House of Hsu’s sizzling rice soup is the best thing I’ve ever had in my mouth. I wanted to put my face in the bowl and absorb every molecule of this delicious experience. The broccoli chicken was very good, the service was very good (our server offered to fill my diet soft drink). Definitely earned a permanent spot on my go-to list!

A quiet, relaxing, dimly lit post war style Chinese restaurant. Many booths with Chinese lanterns hanging above each one. Order a tea and then maybe an egg drop soup for starts while waiting for dinner. Rather normal chinese food but it is prepared with love. I love the names for cocktails like Yellow Bird & Grass Hopper. The atmosphere is calming and relaxing. It does get busy on the usual busy times. Service is attentive and the hostess has always been exceptional. One of my favorite places in Grand Ledge.

This place has never disappointed me! They do a lot of take out business and it’s ready & piping hot in 10 minutes! They have lots of vegetarian choices. The vegetable egg foo yong is my new fave, but the vegetable bean curd is tops too. The hot & sour soup can be made without the meat and the egg drop soup is the best I’ve had at any Chinese restaurant. Get this: it includes vegetables and is not just some hot gelatinous-like mass mixed with eggs in a bowl.

Thought I’d try an old favorite while in Grand Ledge today. Haven’t been to House of Hsu (formerly Charlie Wong’s) for many years. The quiet was a little weird, I remember last time there was Chinese music in the background. The lighting is still a little dim but better than it was. The service was faster than I remember, and my favorite dish, Mongolian Beef, was just as good as it always has been. Love the fried wontons that come with the combo, if you choose, instead of the typical eggroll.
My entire lunch, which filled me to the gills, was only $ 7.53 with a beverage and free refill. The service was quick and pleasant. I will certainly return again and again!
