A longstanding pillar of the Grand Rapids community, this charming, refurbished theater is the heart of the Wealthy Street revitalization for me. Closed for many years, local people and businesses have put time and energy into bring it back to life as a movie and performance center. It is currently operated by the Grand Rapids Community Media Center. Tonight Keifer and Friends, a Pitt Bull rescue organization, featured«Beyond the Myth», a documentary that focus on dispelling myths about Pitt Bulls. Wealthy Theatre was the perfect venue for this event. They even had the concession area open for it! Pro Tip: If you are a Community Media Center member you can by alcohol drinks at Wealthy Theatre. This comes in handy if you are here for a Meanwhile Movie.

Wealthy Theatre was saved from demolition by the Grand Rapids Community Media Center not too many years ago. Built in 1911, WT just celebrated its 100 year anniversary and is as healthy as it has been during that first century. Tuesday nights are a can’t lose situation. The Meanwhile Movie Film Series plays a cult classic each week at 8pm. Occasionally there are tie-ins with other local themes or businesses lending some added fun. The library teams up with the theatre each year to help show the transition from book to film. The films are half price of other movie houses. If you pick a busy week in the fall of WT’s schedule, you will find a vast array of bookings. That week could feature dance, a national touring music act, a multi-media event, live theater and a fashion show. A busy week, but something different to see each day. An easy place to attend multiple nights of the week. The staff/crew is amazing. Each event is well attended and definitely enjoyed by all. The facilities are clean, handicapped accessible and beautifully restored. They have a full bar, popcorn, pop and candy as well. Note that Wealthy Theatre has a club(liquor) license. This means you need to be a member of CMC, the parent organization. Fortunately they make it easy to sign up at any event, online or at their Bridge Street location. One of the other benefits of being a CMC member is ticket discounts! Wealthy Theatre allows members to purchase tickets at a better cost, sometimes with advance pre-sales. Office hours are M-F 2 – 7. You can call them at 616−459−4788×130.

Great venue. Wealthy Theater has been hosting a wide range of events for years now and if you can find one that fits your interest, it’s great. I prefer Meanwhile Movies that work in conjunction with the Meanwhile Bar down the street and they are hosted in their cozy micro-cinema. Easy free parking and they just recently got a liquor license I look forward to taking advantage of as soon as I find a good reason to return.

I love the atmosphere, the people and the eclectic nature of the various events that take place at Wealthy Theatre. Everything from live concerts with great local, regional and national musicians to movies to lectures to the live simulcast of the Inauguration… wow! Ticket prices are great, the historic theatre is beautiful and the neighborhood has developed into a great place for food and fun. I love it there.

There just aren’t too many 100 year old theatres around in general but to have one that is in such fine condition is a rare asset. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing a feature film at a huge IMAX theatre and all that as much as anyone but Wealthy Theatre is a trip back in time. Even with the great vintage vibe, they still bring modern technology to every performance with great sound, lighting and image quality. Grand Rapids is truly lucky to have a place like this and anyone who lives here owes it to themselves to come check it out.
