Great family fun. Starting with carnival, parade, fireworks, vendors and boat races. Covering five days over Memorial day weekend ending with the famous whitewater hydroplane race. All money raised goes back to the children in the community in many different way.

Loud racing boats on the river + Josephine County crowd + traveling carnie + terrible food = what did you expect?

Boatnik is NOT really an arcade, nor is it artistic. I guess for some it is entertaining. Boatnik is an annual shindig held in Grants Pass, OR each Memorial Day weekend. There are sprint boat, drag boat and hydroplane races,(CalOre Racing) my favorite part(if I partake of the festivities at all). There is a beer garden(okay this is my favorite part!) located on the riverbank, the beers aren’t cheap but they ARE cold and you get a good view of the races. Davis Shows(Carnivals) are here for the kiddies and others so inclined. They are expensive, short in duration and the lines are long. There are fast pitch and softball tournaments and a contest to see who can hit a hole in one, shooting from a deck on the riverbank into a «hole» placed in the river near Caveman bridge. The winner of this contest wins a new Chevrolet(I’m a Mopar kinda girl). There is a parade on Saturday morning. This year the parade was slooooooooooow! Usually I enjoy music and marching bands but they were just too damn few and far between to make it a good parade this year, especially in the 80 degree heat! There is usually a dance on Saturday night, but I’ve never been so I can’t give you any input on that. This is sponsored by the Grants Pass Active Club, to benefit children in the area. There is a lot of back slapping going on but I guess that’s okay if kids are really benefitting. Fireworks on Friday and Sunday nights which are tolerable. Bingo in the pavilion, which is put on by the GPHS Marching Band and Auxiliary boosters. Since it’s in the Pavilion, it’s in the shade so I recommend the Bingo! The food at Boatnik is gross, unless you bring your own. There used to be better vendors but the rude, thuggy kids have forced the better crafts people/vendors to leave Boatnik off their itineraries. Fighter jets do a flyover on Monday, Memorial Day. Kind of like, but definitely not, the Blue Angels! My kids are grown so you will probably find me back at Carnaval in San Francisco next Memorial Day Weekend!
